Forever Young: John Hughes Film Fashion

    image

John Hughes can pretty much be credited for the creation of the archetypal American high school, and his classic films popularized the style and feel of teens in the '80s. What he brought to the screen didn't just influence trends at the time-- it continues to trickle into fashion movements. Here, a look at the quintessential looks from Hughes' movies, some of which are totally relevant today thanks to the '80s being back in a big way.

The bucket hat and blazer: In 1986's "Pretty In Pink," Molly Ringwald plays heroine Andie. She isn't the most popular girl in school, but she loves fashion and shows off her creative personal style. With a nod to "Annie Hall," Ringwald modeled the menswear-inspired look, but added a feminine edge with floral scarves, which eventually gave way to the "Blossom" craze.

TheFind Says Hot Pink Is The New Black!

Think PINK this summer as we transition into fall. The '80s influence continues and we are loving the sizzling hot hues, especially neon hot pink. The stark contrast of neon pink with black looks fresh, fun, and girlie for clothing and accessories. Pair a hot pink shell blouse with an oversized black boyfriend blazer and skinny jeans, or go from head to toe in a hot pink asymmetric dress. There are also loads of bright pink accessories such as this cheeky Alexander McQueen clutch, neon pink belt, or pink thong sandals if you're looking for just a dash of neon color. There are SO many reasons why we're excited about the "Gossip Girl" spinoff, starring Krysten Ritter and Brittany Snow. The cast, the setting, the prospect of meeting hunky younger Rufus and the mysterious Mr. Van der Woodsen... after seeing photos from the show's first episode, though, we've got another thing to add to the list of things to look forward to: amazing '80s fashion. Yes, the decade that so obviously inspires "Gossip Girl" fashion designer Jenny "neon" Humphrey is on full display in the series premiere. You can't help but be reminded of all the crazy things you wore in the '80s!

Say Hello To Hip Belts -- The New Fanny Pack!

    image

The "hip belt" or fanny pack is a terrific alternative to lugging around a huge handbag. It's perfect for when you have a few essentials but don't want to put them into your pockets. Besides the silly name, fanny packs are the perfect way to accessorize an outfit with something functional and potentially stylish. We're not talking high fashion here, of course, but rather something you'd slip on for a Saturday run to Starbucks or for a trip to the farmers market. You can't argue with the versatility of fanny packs -- they're multi-functional and hands-free -- and the sweet graphics on the Le Sportsac hip belts make them all the more enticing! I love the brand for their vibrant design, travel totes, bags, and accessories. Love, love, love! It's the perfect deviation from the black leather satchel I carried for years. I don't know how I ended up in such a handbag rut, especially since I love bright whimsical and colorful accessories like these! Check out more fun fanny packs and other funky trends from our friends over at TheFind!

Relive The Good Old Days With Some Updated Keds Sneakers!

As a nostalgic '80s and '90s baby, I've always looked back at wearing Keds fondly. It's sort of like remembering when MTV used to play music videos: a distant, heartwarming memory of a time that, sadly, will likely never repeat itself. Looking through Keds' newest offerings, though, I might be forced to rethink my stance. They're actually pretty adorable! The company has updated its iconic Champion shoe (or "skips," to some of us) in funky colors and fabrics (such as croc-embossed leather) and even launched a Keds Studio on their Web site where you can design your own version of the classic sneaker. In addition, Keds and Tracy Reese's Plenty line have collaborated on a collection that might have quite a few of us itching to jump back on the Keds bandwagon (just please don't break out the multicolored slouch socks with them...please?). Check out the slideshow for a Keds update!

Reel to Real: Get The Claire Standish Look From "The ...

Claire Standish: Love her or hate her, she's the quintessential '80s princess you either wanted to be or wanted to run over (but still... wanted to be). Played by Molly Ringwald, she is forever remembered for dropping gems like, "Do you know how popular I am? I am so popular. Everybody loves me so much at this school," she eventually redeemed herself by crossing social battle lines to hook up with the outcast Bender (Judd Nelson) and giving Allison (Ally Sheedy) a compassionate, less invasive version of "The Swan" in the girls' bathroom. Yet it's her clothes, maybe more than her status, that we coveted. Classic rich yet understated WASP/prep style: knee-length tweed skirts, lace-up riding boots, and layered tops paired with leather accessories. With the '80s back in full-force on the Fall 2009 runways, jump on the trend early-- or just if you're feeling nostalgic-- and cop Claire's look by clicking the slideshow.
