Get Sophisticated In Peplum Skirts And Dresses

    image
Anna Yu on Nov 2, 2009 10:23 AM PST
What do Fergie, Lily Allen, and Rihanna all have in common (besides being famously popular singers)? They've been seen wearing peplum dresses and skirts! If you don't know what a peplum is, it's an addition of a short skirt-like panel over the waist on a dress or skirt. Reminiscent of Dior's "New Look" and also of '80s style, peplum dresses and skirts are feminine looks that accentuate hourglass figures. These days, the peplum combines the best of the retro sensibilities of the '40s along with the youthful exuberance of the '80s. Urban Outfitters gives us a taste of the 80s look with their Tribal Print Peplum Skirt made of one of a kind vintage fabrics. For a more classic look, turn to the Alice + Olivia Multi Gather Peplum Dress in a beautiful red satin that will be sure to turn heads at holiday parties. New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010: Jill Stuart

    image

For her Spring 2010 runway show at New York Fashion Week, Jill Stuart presented a futuristic collection that also paid homage to the bold spirit of the '80s. This collection had a very strong borrowed-from-the-boudoir theme- sheer fabrics and panels, corsets, lace, and dresses so short they looked like lingerie all added to the va va voom vibe. It wasn't all about the vamps and vixens though- there were plenty of softly draped white dresses that were definitely on the more wearable end of the spectrum. However, these too were sexed up with killer lace-up boots that looked like corsets for your feet. This collection was marked by micro-minis (like seriously micro), second skin pants, strong shoulders, sequins, metallics, and oversized studs, all of which added to the sexy, edgy, rocker vibe. My wishlist included a black shimmery backless halter, a studded strapless dress, a metallic draped micro-mini, and a pink zebra striped sequined dress that seriously caused my jaw to hit the floor. TheFind Says Hot Pink Is The New Black!

Think PINK this summer as we transition into fall. The '80s influence continues and we are loving the sizzling hot hues, especially neon hot pink. The stark contrast of neon pink with black looks fresh, fun, and girlie for clothing and accessories. Pair a hot pink shell blouse with an oversized black boyfriend blazer and skinny jeans, or go from head to toe in a hot pink asymmetric dress. There are also loads of bright pink accessories such as this cheeky Alexander McQueen clutch, neon pink belt, or pink thong sandals if you're looking for just a dash of neon color. "Gossip Girl" Goes Totally '80s!

There are SO many reasons why we're excited about the "Gossip Girl" spinoff, starring Krysten Ritter and Brittany Snow. The cast, the setting, the prospect of meeting hunky younger Rufus and the mysterious Mr. Van der Woodsen... after seeing photos from the show's first episode, though, we've got another thing to add to the list of things to look forward to: amazing '80s fashion. Yes, the decade that so obviously inspires "Gossip Girl" fashion designer Jenny "neon" Humphrey is on full display in the series premiere. You can't help but be reminded of all the crazy things you wore in the '80s!
Be sure to check out our friends at SOAPnet for the rest of the article, plus a slideshow with more exclusive photos from the spin-off set!

Say Hello To Hip Belts -- The New Fanny Pack!

    image

The "hip belt" or fanny pack is a terrific alternative to lugging around a huge handbag. It's perfect for when you have a few essentials but don't want to put them into your pockets. Besides the silly name, fanny packs are the perfect way to accessorize an outfit with something functional and potentially stylish. We're not talking high fashion here, of course, but rather something you'd slip on for a Saturday run to Starbucks or for a trip to the farmers market. You can't argue with the versatility of fanny packs -- they're multi-functional and hands-free -- and the sweet graphics on the Le Sportsac hip belts make them all the more enticing! I love the brand for their vibrant design, travel totes, bags, and accessories. Love, love, love! It's the perfect deviation from the black leather satchel I carried for years. I don't know how I ended up in such a handbag rut, especially since I love bright whimsical and colorful accessories like these! Relive The Good Old Days With Some Updated Keds Sneakers!

As a nostalgic '80s and '90s baby, I've always looked back at wearing Keds fondly. It's sort of like remembering when MTV used to play music videos: a distant, heartwarming memory of a time that, sadly, will likely never repeat itself. Looking through Keds' newest offerings, though, I might be forced to rethink my stance. They're actually pretty adorable! The company has updated its iconic Champion shoe (or "skips," to some of us) in funky colors and fabrics (such as croc-embossed leather) and even launched a Keds Studio on their Web site where you can design your own version of the classic sneaker. In addition, Keds and Tracy Reese's Plenty line have collaborated on a collection that might have quite a few of us itching to jump back on the Keds bandwagon (just please don't break out the multicolored slouch socks with them...please?). Check out the slideshow for a Keds update!
