    Vintage Fashionistas Go Boho!

    image
Mary Kincaid on Jun 26, 2009 8:21 AM PDT
First there was Boho, then Nouveau Boho, then Boho Chic, and now it's Foho. Or maybe that was Boho, then Boho Chic, and then Nouveau Boho...whatever. Add in French Bobo and a recent reference I saw to Woe-ho and it's enough to make a girl's head spin. But any way you look at it, and whatever you want to call it, women seem to love this easy-breezy style of seventies silhouettes, billowy blouses, crochet trim, soft worn-in denim and traditional embroideries. While Sienna Miller, Kate Moss and the Olsen twins might have started the craze, and others may tell you it's on the outs, I still know plenty of gals who aren't willing to give up these comfy clothes just yet. This is one style where authentic vintage clothing is way cooler than new. So just click the slideshow and go boho!

Party Like it's 1970 This Halloween!

Back in the day, the 1970s signaled the emergence of musical talents like Patti Smith, David Bowie, and the Sex Pistols. These days, we're seeing the decade in another light- it's a great source of fashion inspiration for this year's Halloween costume! The fashion and style of the 70s suit every style from mini dresses to maxi dresses and even jumpsuits! Since this decade's made a huge comeback in the past few years, you probably already have a few 70s-inspired pieces of clothing for your Halloween look. If not, scouring your local vintage stores is sure to turn up some great items. Look for lots of ethnic inspired prints, paisley, long and loose caftans and tunics, and turquoise jewelry. For DIYers, look into the archives of famed fashion houses such as Halston, Givenchy, and Yves Saint Laurent, watch old episodes of Charlie's Angels or find vintage dress patterns to start your creations. And for those less talented with a needle and thread, check out my SLIDESHOW for ideas that will have you stepping back in time (in platforms, of course).

Vintage Style: Button Up a Figure-Friendly Vest This Fall!

The vest is back and what a fun little piece of clothing! So many ways to wear it...so many styles to choose from...so many moods to create. Unless you're planning on a knitted version with bells and snowmen, it's pretty hard to go wrong. And with cuts for every type of figure, from buxom to petite, there's a figure-flattering vest out there for any shape or size. Originally introduced by Charles II of England way back in the 1600s, the recent menswear revival puts vests front and center for the next few months. And the good news is that vintage vests are plentiful and, quite often, inexpensive. Just click the SLIDESHOW for some inspiration!

Vintage Style: If The Gloves Fit, Wear 'Em!

Gloves are one of this season's must-have fall accessories. They appeared on just about every fall runway and it's not about utility--even if it doesn't get cold enough to throw a snowball where you live, chances are you'll see women wearing gloves in a few months! This year, besides the standard leather, velvet, or suede, we've seen lace, cotton, silk and sheer gloves plus bright colors, beading, feathers, and fur. It's a glove bonanza! Plus, since gloves take up hardly any room, you can amass a huge collection quickly. And vintage versions abound! Just click the SLIDESHOW for the selection.

Hive 5: Make a Presidential Campaign Fashion Statement!

    image

With the upcoming November '08 presidential election, politically charged fashion is being taken to new levels. Diddy may have popularized campaign couture with his trendy 2004 "Vote or Die" line of tees, but fashion being used to make a personal or political statement is anything but new news. From the Civil War to the 1960's and 70's to now, fashion has played an important role in the expression of our political beliefs. So forget about bumper stickers (who wants anything plastered to their car after Election Day anyways!?). This fall, don't be afraid to make a statement - a fashion statement! From shoes, to jewelry, to tees and bags. There are a surprising number of campaign related items for every political party circulating the Hive! So check 'em out and also click on my slideshow for some of my fave political statement styles and items!
