Vintage Fashionistas Pay Tribute To The Queen Of Swimwear

    image

Rose Marie Reid was the Queen of Swimwear in the 1950s, ruling an empire that produced 10,000 suits a day and posted sales of $14 million by 1958! Women loved her knack for hiding figure flaws and it was Rose Marie Reid who pioneered the use of tummy control panels, wire bra cups and the boning and adjustable straps that we enjoy in modern swimwear today. Plus she was a woman who stood by her convictions. Because she was Mormon, she refused to design immodest bathing suits. So while her company did ultimately create bikinis, Rose Marie Reid refused to participate in their design. For vintage fashionistas, an early authentic Rose Marie Reid swimsuit is a coveted find. Gloves are one of this season's must-have fall accessories. They appeared on just about every fall runway and it's not about utility--even if it doesn't get cold enough to throw a snowball where you live, chances are you'll see women wearing gloves in a few months! This year, besides the standard leather, velvet, or suede, we've seen lace, cotton, silk and sheer gloves plus bright colors, beading, feathers, and fur. It's a glove bonanza! Plus, since gloves take up hardly any room, you can amass a huge collection quickly. And vintage versions abound! Just click the SLIDESHOW for the selection.

Do the words vintage, burlesque, glamorous, pinup, and old Hollywood have you curious? Stylehiver MargotBlanche's style embodies all of the above, and I think it needs to be shared. Her saves include everything you need to rival the likes of Dita Von Teese. From hair pieces complete with feathers and intricate beading that would have 1920's flappers jealous to platform pumps and 1950s-style dresses with tight silhouettes, this girl has a handle on the best of old-world glam. Make sure to check out her selection of vixen-worthy corsets-- they will no doubt have you ready to go retro. MargotBlanche's hive is a wonderful spot to gain inspiration whether vintage vixen is your natural everyday style or your idea of the perfect costume. Check out her saves for yourself, but first check out some of my favorites of hers in my slideshow!

Old Style: 7 Mean Shaheen Dresses for All You Vintage ...

Alfred Shaheen designed fabrics and clothing for over 40 years, creating one of the largest manufacturing operations that Hawaii would ever see. In the 1950s, he built an $8 million factory complex that allowed him to print, dye and finish all his own fabrics. And his textile designs are legendary! Inspired by Hawaiian, Polynesian and Asian cultures, each print was lovingly handscreened onto the fabric. Then that fabric was fashioned into everything from bombshell sundresses to elegant cocktail attire, from fun little playsuits to casual hostess gowns. Here Comes the (Vintage) Bride!

A friend who's experiencing marital problems recently proclaimed, "Next time, I'm going to choose my mother-in-law, and then fall in love with her son!" And it seems to me, it might also be good advice to choose your wedding dress and then decide who you'll marry! I admit it's a sort of "build it and he will come" philosophy, maybe a bit too New Age-y for some. But when you think of your perfect wedding, doesn't it include both the perfect man AND the perfect dress? And since the perfect dress seems easier to find, why not start there? Vintage versions are not only beautiful but, compared to the price of a new designer wedding gown, they'll put a smaller dent in your pocketbook and leave extra for a fabulous honeymoon in Bali. Just click SEE SLIDESHOW to view my selection.
