"Women have highly resolved that they are just as good as men, and intend to be treated so...They don't intend to be debarred from any profession or occupation which they choose to enter. " This quote is from an article by Bruce Bliven entitled "Flapper Jane" that first appeared in The New Republic way back in 1925. He was speaking, of course, about "flappers," the rebels of their day. These were women who cut their hair, wore makeup, showed their knees, listened to jazz and ignored the conventional social and sexual norms. In many ways, flappers paved the way for all of the liberties that we modern women take for granted. Of course, the flappers left something else behind, too-- beautiful dresses!
