Today's modern woman thinks nothing of blow-drying her short hair, slipping into a skirt and blouse, driving to work and then heading out for a cocktail at the end of the day. But all these things wouldn't be possible if it weren't for the rebellion of the young ladies of the 1920s known as Flappers. These women--gasp!--showed their knees, exercised their independence, embraced their sexuality and did it all with style. Their unusual habit of walking around with their galoshes unfastened, making "flapper" sounds, lent them their name and fortunately they left behind some real gems for today's vintage fashionistas. Still at a loss on what to be this Halloween? Let's go back in time and visit the styles of the Roaring 20s! The 1920s marked the arrival of a new independent woman called the flapper. Found at speakeasies and jazz clubs, their look showcased bare arms, short hemlines, heavy makeup, and sleek short hair (think of Velma and Roxie from the musical "Chicago"). Designers today have taken inspiration from the 20s and you too can find clothes and accessories that will have people saying you're "the bee's knees." Take a look at this color-block flapper inspired dress with a rhinestone encrusted neckline or these shoes with a unique wishbone style strap that will have you dancing all night long. Do the words vintage, burlesque, glamorous, pinup, and old Hollywood have you curious? Stylehiver MargotBlanche's style embodies all of the above, and I think it needs to be shared. Her saves include everything you need to rival the likes of Dita Von Teese. From hair pieces complete with feathers and intricate beading that would have 1920's flappers jealous to platform pumps and 1950s-style dresses with tight silhouettes, this girl has a handle on the best of old-world glam. Make sure to check out her selection of vixen-worthy corsets-- they will no doubt have you ready to go retro. MargotBlanche's hive is a wonderful spot to gain inspiration whether vintage vixen is your natural everyday style or your idea of the perfect costume. Check out her saves for yourself, but first check out some of my favorites of hers in my slideshow!

"Women have highly resolved that they are just as good as men, and intend to be treated so...They don't intend to be debarred from any profession or occupation which they choose to enter. " This quote is from an article by Bruce Bliven entitled "Flapper Jane" that first appeared in The New Republic way back in 1925. He was speaking, of course, about "flappers," the rebels of their day. These were women who cut their hair, wore makeup, showed their knees, listened to jazz and ignored the conventional social and sexual norms. In many ways, flappers paved the way for all of the liberties that we modern women take for granted. Of course, the flappers left something else behind, too-- beautiful dresses! Click my SLIDESHOW for an exquisite collection of flapper dresses that are oh-so-stylish for modern vintage fashionistas!
