"In the war of oranges," this vintage ad claims, "Smirnoff is neutral." I don't think they can say the same about their stance on the War of Pants vs. No Pants. Click to enlarge. [VintageAds]

Gina Fratini was one of the prominent members of the British Boutique Movement in the 60s and 70s; natural contemporary to Ossie Clark and Thea Porter. Her whimsical, romantic confections regularly graced the pages of Vogue and enchanted buyers everywhere. Her use of antique lace and trimmings was her trademark and came as a refreshing alternative to the strong 'mod' look of the mid-60s.
This dress is c.1969 (as demonstrated in the gingham frenzy below in Vogue 1969) and is a rare, early piece by a designer whose successes were largely in the 70s. It's an absolutely adorable smock, in the cutest blue gingham with a pierrot collar, oversized gathered pockets and full sleeves into tight cuffs. The whole look is one of Alice in Wonderland; girlish, romantic and wacky.

Some of my favourite Ossie pieces haven't been the prints, or even the most unusual fabrics and colours. Nothing quite beats a Little Black Ossie frock, especially when it's one as drop-dead sexy as this.
It's not a style you'll see very often, with the scalloped satin trim around a scandalously deep keyhole neckline - tied as loosely as you want at the neck. The darts at the top ensure fit at the bust, but then it flows more freely to the floor. The arms are concealed in billowing full length sleeves and buttoned cuffs. Ossie really knew about how to make something so revealing in one place, but appear demure through concealment elsewhere. It's a true showstopper of a dress, a scalloped scandale!

Superb knitted ensemble by Bill Gibb (with the pattern, as ever, designed by Kaffe Fassett) in a luscious burnt orange with a very wintry pattern. Gibb was famed for his knitted sets, but a really amazing and wearable piece is a lot rarer and I personally think this is one of the best. The proportions are well balanced, the cardigan is given an 'edge' with the ties which tie the sides and down the front. I also love the pleated vent in the back, which is perfectly aligned to the pattern.
Fairly freesize due to the style - tagged as a 'Medium' and I would say this was about right. Top measures 46" flat across the bust, length is 28", skirt length is 30", and the elasticated waist on the skirt goes up to 34".
Label: Bill Gibb / Colour: orange with pattern / Fabric: pure new wool
Condition: Excellent / Flaws: Has been gently cleaned. Sold as vintage.

A pair of the most impractically gorgeous platforms ever! By Trueform, they are a vision in soft grey with a lovely double knot effect peeptoe front and scandalous 4½" heels. If you can walk in them, you're a better woman than me but also an infinitely stylish one! I want to put them in a glass case and just stare at them all day.

Label:Trueform / Colour:Grey / Fabric:man made upper and sole / Condition:Excellent
Flaws:Some minor curling to the insole, the worst of it has been reglued. Soles and heels are in practically unworn condition. Sold as vintage.
