Known for his sculptural approach to design, Cristobal Balenciaga was a perfectionist who obsessed over details. The apparent simplicity of this black straw hat from the late 1950’s is belied by its perfect proportions: crown just deep enough to suggest a matador, brim flatteringly wider from side-to-side than from front to back—simply lovely! The edge of the brim is wired to hold its shape, and the straw is a true black, shiny and finely woven. The shallow crown is trimmed with a narrow band of black silk organza, subtle enough not to detract from clean design. Inner circumference of the crown: 20”
