I'm always surprised when I meet native New Yorkers and Brooklynites who don't know about Beacon's Closet, but they exist. 2 locations: Williamsburg and Park Slope and lots of clothes for digging. My most recent "finds" (at the Park Slope locale) were a Christian Dior Hommes trench coat for $30, a yellow Chanel suit for $24 and a Richard Tyler Couture blouse for $15. Since the P. Slope store is smaller, it can get crowded easily, so expect a long line and wait for the dressing rooms. Happy digging!

A thrift store originally geared towards school teachers in search of low-cost school supplies, the 'Depot,' as I've heard it been called, collects and resells donated items, mostly of the office supply / stationary sort, from offices and businesses. Alot of the items are use but many are also new, having been discarded without so much as a second glance (I once found an unopened, unused HP printer cartridge amidst a pile of file folders; lucky for me, it matched my HP printer and, had I bought the same cartridge at a store, it would cost $30+!). I try to check in once every couple of weeks as the inventory does change, but anytime I go, it's always a treasure hunt of sorts and I always walk away with something interesting.
