Mari takes huge t-shirts and transforms them into some really stylish fashion items. It turns out these designs were part of her submission to Urban Outfitters Urban Renewal Project.

There is a lot of eco-chatter these days about adaptive reuse and reclaimed materials in green design, particularly in the realm of fashion-forward garments and accessories. Estethica, London Fashion Weeks recent sustainable design showcase featured some great examples of recycled/repurposed materials in designs that are light in footprint but substantial in style. One of the bright young stars of Estethica, Mark Liu, has taken sustainable fashion one step further with his zero-waste fabric patterns and eco-designs that do just that, waste not a scrap of fabric. Lius pieces are yet another example of why Central Saint Martins grads are true innovators, as his next generation of pattern making is both wearable and cutting edge.

The way a chair breaks up space or a building cuts into the sky with so many different views is how I feel a garment relates to the body, says Brooklyn designer Nina Valenti, who launched the sustainable line naturevsfuture in 2002. I design pieces that have a strong line, form and texture. Her clothing has severe pleats and soft gathers, military stiffness and feminine slits, the yin and yang of organic and technological forces. Her fabrics range from the expected organic cottons, wools, hemps and soys to fabrics made from recycled soda bottles.
