Born on the flat, African landscape of small farming town Kroonstad in the Free State, South Africa's Palesa Mokubung started designing and making clothes long before she could do anything else. From there she went on to study fashion at a small, private technical college and eventually went on to gain practical experience at legendary African designers Stoned Cherrie. Palesa participated in several high profile fashion events, including SA Fashion Week, as part of the Stoned Cherrie-team. Her big break came after entering a young fashion talent competition, for which she produced a fashion show using themes from South Africa's 10 Years of Freedom - celebrations as inspiration. After winning the competition, she travelled internationally with this ground breaking collection.

2008 is big on choice and shows plenty of strong vivid colour without the over dominance of one particular shade. Greys and black remain the biggest platforms for the execution of colour while browns stand alongside as the hottest up and comings. This season is all about keeping things simple and making great colour combinations do the work for you. This season is dressy and well groomed and shows a love of stylish, flattering, fashion that we are only too happy to indulge in.

If fashion is an aesthetic expression of social consciousness, then Black Coffee’s clothing provided an effective mirror for my fears on the unnaturally chilly weather. The collection featured items in muted pastels draped and tied in various ways around the androgynous models. The look was loose, layered, romantic and hooded-fit for a nomad searching for other surviving human life forms in a post-apocalyptic wasteland.

Karen Monk Klijnstra’s collection “Retrospectrum” is inspired by 50’s Sophia Town and in particular the music and dance of the era. This energy is carried across through colour and prints. From Sishweshe cloth to vintage fabrics and tablecloth checks, it all works together to form a collection with a truly Klijnstra-like twist. The colours used also evoke that sense of energy associated with retro fashion and design. Oranges, yellows, greens, purple and turquoise clash in pop-art-style designs while still maintaining an African edge.

The grannies brought down the house in style – Ella Buter utilising the unconventional models to convey her fairytale theme of "Young at heart". With bright yellows, pinks and greens the range is two-dimensional with clumsy garments which are at times unflattering, but still superbly constructed.
