The raised decoration on these vases is so extraordinary that the artisans chose to leave them otherwise undecorated. Our examples, modeled in white porcelain with raised relief, depict three flowers that are particularly prized in Chinese culture. The clutch of graceful articulated spider chrysanthemums symbolize autumn and an easy life after retirement. The peonies, mixed with sprays of larkspur, represent spring, health, and honor. The gardenia blossoms are emblematic of the month of November, and are well known for their intoxicating fragrance. Clear glaze on the pure white underbody has subtle undertones that reflect light and cast a luminous moon glow, especially in a darkened room.
