When you think of movies from the 1950's, you remember the shiny cars, the cocktails, and best of all, the clothes - everyone looked so fresh-scrubbed yet grown up. No matter how many pairs of designer jeans I buy, I will never look half as good as Chita Rivera did strutting around New York in her tight pencil skirts. Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren, Rita Hayworth- who hasn't secretly wished for that kind of sweet yet smoldering appeal? What was their secret? Surely everyone couldn't have just lucked out and been born with tiny waists and perfect hips.Maybe the secret was actually in the clothes themselves.

You've been looking everywhere for that quintessential wear-anywhere dress, a piece you can wear with pearls and heels or flats and big, chunky beads. It can't be too cutesy or formal, and it needs to be unique enough not to see on every girl in line at Starbucks. The Red Hook dress is the perfect Gal Friday of a dress - chock full of special details, from the assymetrical ruffle from the left shoulder to the waist, to the black and pink polka-dot fabric, to the sweet fitted style and full-coverage neckline, this is one dress that you'll pull out of the closet for parties, brunch, dates, shopping, dinner, work, and all that other stuff that constitutes being a modern girl. The polka dots are adorably retro, and the cut keeps everything delightfully modern. You'll look and feel like a total hottie in this dress whether you're a size 2 or a size 16.

When you were little, the best part of going anywhere fancy was getting dressed up - the lacy ankle socks, the shiny patent-leather shoes, and, of course, the party dress with the swingy skirt that was perfect for twirling. The Yasamen is the grown-up version of that dress - A fitted bodice with a sweetheart neckline, tank straps, and a super-full pleated skirt. The chocolate brown silk-linen dress has a peacock-blue silk shantung inset. Fully lined in chocolate satin. Back zip; skirt hits at knee. The swishy full skirt instantly camoflauges your tummy and slims hips, and the wide straps and high back will amply cover your bra, so you can party all night without constantly adjusting.

Cupcake Handbag, Strawberry Frosting Attempting to hide 'undesirable' food at the dinner table was a fine art form when we were kids. You could always hide a few beans under the mashed potatoes or wrap a couple carrots in your napkin for disposal, but the cook usually busted us. Now had we been able to disguise our veggies in a lovely little cupcake handbag we might have made it out of the kitchen door. (Please note that the management does not recommend this item for food storage!) A word to the adults: From the delicious imagination of Amy Gaines at Purl, we’re serving up sugary sweet cupcake handbags. Created from Amy’s original design, each bag is individually hand crocheted with a chocolate base and strawberry frosting. Untie the drawstring handles and there’s plenty of room for your little one to store all manner of good stuff. Each drawstring is capped with a lovely bead and as such we recommend this item for ages 3 and up. Wash on gentle and low tumble dry.

This special class seems right up my alley. A great find for DIYs. This Saturday you can visit 3rd Ward in Brooklyn and take a class on Reconstructing Vintage Clothing. You just need to bring a clothing project that you have been wanting to tackle and head to 3rd Ward. Molly Dilworth will help participants review the garments and show you possibilities for alternating the item. And the best thing is you will get suggestions tailored to your individual garments. Molly Dilworth is a Brooklyn artist who has made commissioned sewing projects for Calvin Klein, LaSuperette, Spring Gallery and with artists Marina Zurkow and Julian Bleeker.
