For his 2010 pre-fall collection for Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld took a trip back in time to 1920s Shanghai in a tribute to Gabrielle Chanel’s well-known love of chinoiserie—despite never actually visiting the country herself, Mademoiselle Coco reportedly used classic Chinese quilting as the basis for her iconic handbag designs.
In addition to all manner of ornate, embroidered and embellished coats and dresses, the collection was punctuated by accessories fit for Old Shanghainese high society. The timeless flap bag received a major update from exotic python, quirky charm details and shimmering green sequins (classic flap bag in python with Mademoiselle chain and signature turnlock and hand-embroidered sequin classic flap bag, both price available upon request). Other standouts include tall boots in punchy shades yellow and red, statement-making fringe earrings and stacks of bold cuffs.
