The search to find a balance between the decorated surface and the pot's form is a puzzle, with an elusive solution, that sustains my interest. I'm prompted to design the surface spontaneously; to map my experiences and draw from my inspirations. My work forms a bridge between two-dimensional media and the sculptural aspects of pots. An etched line, a calligraphic brushstroke and the movement and pattern of a written language influence the surface. Growth and motion are represented by universal images of birds and plants.

For generations, village craftsmen on the island of Lombok in Indonesia have used clay and rattan to create items for everyday use. The clay for these vessels is molded into shape then fired by placing it into a flame of burning sticks and rattan. It's left to cool before a watertight black finish is applied. Michael Lambert has been designing and making pottery in his California studio since 1967. His work has been featured in many publications, including American Craft, and has been on the cover of Ceramics Monthly. His aim is to create pieces which show respect for the beautiful sculptural pots of the past, but are also fresh and, like the series below, playful.

Working in series similar to printmaking, my ceramic vessel forms come from sketches and are made in clay on the wheel, handbuilt, or cast . The resulting shapes are only partially complete and become a canvas on which I carve, paint and scribe with spontaniety. One surface idea informs the next until the desired balance is achieved in the final piece. The shapes and patterns have developed and changed over the years and becoming my signature visual language . Made from white stoneware clay, all surfaces including deeply carved areas are finished with a lead free matte glaze and are food safe. I welcome the use of my vessel pottery and enjoy the idea that once the pots leave the studio they lead new and varied lives.

After thirty years of design experience, Nancy Bauchs work is still her meditation. My white work studies the enclosed space within shapes. I am interested in capturing the anticipated movement of a shape as it is being built the pieces are unfolding, flowing. The openings are just emerging. This is happening everywhere in nature. The flower that is just unfolding, not fully open. The fruit in its beginnings as it grows to become whole. There is innocence in this early state of incompleteness that speaks to me.
