HEI-MATAU (Fish Hook) represents strength, prosperity and abundance. Said to provide good luck and safe journey over water. Symbol of power and authority to the Maori people. Also known as New Zealand Jade, or Pounamu in Maori. Greenstone is the most prized and distinctive of New Zealand gemstones. The value lies in its beauty, toughness and hardness. Traditionally Maori used greenstone for making weapons, tools, ornaments, and for trading. Maori valued greenstone in the same way Europeans valued gold. In New Zealand, greenstone is found only in the South Island. New Zealand’s greenstone is composed of either nephrite or bowenite. Nephrite contains small amounts of iron, deciding the depth of green colour.
