The Label: The Texas native and Parson’s graduate has been designing girly but smart clothes with lots of embellishments—embroidery, piping, beading, and other trimming details—since she launched her collection in 1996. Popular among young socialites and celebrities, including First Daughters Jenna and Barbara Bush, Rose frequently juxtaposes fabrics in unusual ways—terry cloth with lace, for example—to give her classic feminine silhouettes something unexpected, and a more modern edge. She earned her chops working under Christian Francis Roth and Richard Tyler. The Look: The girl with the most cake. Pretty, frilly, sexy—and forever young.

The Label: Desperate to find comfy, stylish clothes to wear during her pregnancy in the early sixties, Parisian Sonia Rykiel decided to make some of her own. In 1968, she opened her own boutique on the Left Bank from which she hawked her covetable knits. The American press dubbed her the “Queen of Knits.” From there, she proceeded to invert seams, de-line looks, and add other non-precious, fun effects to her clothes, winning her a following among the fashion-forward folks. The Designer: Born in Paris in 1930, Sonia Rykiel had no formal design training except window dressing when she was a teenager. But in 1985, the French government showed its appreciation by awarding her the Legion d’Honneur. Today, her daughter Nathalie, who serves as the company’s creative director, infuses much of her mother’s cheekiness into the label—she added sex toys to the retail offerings at their freestanding stores.

The Custo Barcelona fashion empire was created in the 1980s after the brothers Custo and David Dalmau went on a round-the-world motorcycle trip and came back impressed by the California lifestyle, especially the colorful and innovative T-shirts that didn't exist in Spain at that time. Signature Custo Barcelona knits and t-shirts are screen-printed in bright colors with unique illustrations and intricate details such as embroidery, foil and metal graphics. The brothers continue to expand their horizons, having recently expanded to include handbag and denim lines. The Custo Barcelona line is available in no less than 30 countries, enjoying a particularly strong presence in Europe and Australia.
