In the 1860s, a French artist created a fantastical study of avian life; a three-dimensional tableau populated by carved and painted songbirds, twig perches, and nests. This extraordinary watercolor is a translation of that artwork handpainted in dramatic scale on a sheet of lustrous ivory silk. Hardwood frame with a faux-marble finish. 44"W x 60"H. Imported. Also available at Gump's San Francisco store. 'The Nesting Tree' Painting on Silk ($75 fs) 141602 $995.00

Phillip Lichtenhan, a native of Tucson, credits his natural talent to his mother who minored in art at the U of A, and his love of craft to his father who was a cabinetmaker in Tucson. From the time he was a small child, Phillip was an artist in his heart, soul and mind, forever seeking art experience in and out of school. He has degrees from both Northern Arizona University and the U of A and, in addition to pursuing his career as an artist, has taught art in numerous settings and levels. In addition to creating other wonderful forms and works of art, Phillip has created a wonderful series of bird nest sculptures using weathered industrial and found materials to weave the nests. He constructs the nests with wire, barbed wire, steel banding and other found objects, creating nests that are sometimes quite like bird nests in look and scale and other times creating nests that are larger and more mysterious.

Antiqued coils of recycled, hand-shaped wire evoke the thatching of a bird's nest. Each sits on a matte black recycled metal stand, and is sculpted to securely hold a tea light. When lit, the nests seem to glow as if suspended in mid-air. Tea lights, placecards or petite portions of candy can nestle inside the mini-nests. TEA LIGHT HOLDERS 2.5"SQ x 4"H, 6"H, AND 8"H, MINI-NESTS 2.5"D

Antiqued brass coils of recycled, hand-shaped wire evoke the thatching of a bird's nest. Inside it sit two smooth, luminous glass eggs that shimmer with soft blue-tinged light. Its diminutive size leaves ample space for it to be combined with other collectibles on mantles, shelves, and tables. Fanciful as well as beautiful, the glowing nest makes an unusual gift that will soon become a conversation piece. 6"D X 2.5"H
