Winner of the Compasso d'Oro Award. To create his Ripples Collection (2003), Toyo Ito was inspired by the appearance of concentric circles spreading across the surface of water that's been disturbed by a thrown pebble. Ito also says that the design reminds him of the rings in a tree. Created with five layers of different woods - walnut, mahogany, cherry, oak and ash - Ripples is created by pressing together 5mm-thick layers of each wood. A pantograph machine is used to carve a slight bowl into the layers. Due to the natural variations in the grain of these woods, every Ripples Bench is unique.
