Leonardsdirect Beds Bedroom Furniture

The Pencil Post Bed was the first truly American version of the poster bed. The textile hangings used on these original Pencil Post Beds were often among the owner’s most valuable possessions. In homes with few separate bedrooms, the hangings were closed around the sleepers for privacy and warmth. As with all the beds we make, this one incorporates 7” flat wood side rails to accommodate yet conceal the modern box spring. The head posts stand 81" (84" to the top of acorn finial). This Pencil Post Bed is shown in tiger maple, one of our specialties. The fine wood is hand scraped, not sanded, to bring out the beautiful grain. $2,750

The most fashionable bedmakers of the late 18th Century favored grand details such as clustered columns, spiral-carved urns and leaf-carved vases. Today, these classic posts continue to make a dramatic statement when coupled with a generous molded, arch-top headboard in mahogany or upholstered with a fine textile.
