Antoine Chartres was born in Lyon, France in 1903, Chartres entered the School of Art in Lyon in 1919, where he became a professor in 1939. He studied painting with Henri Veilly and began exhibiting his work in 1926 at the Expositions des Indépendants in Lyon and at the renowned Salon d'Automne in Paris. He also exhibitied at the Salon des Tuileries from 1933 to 1943. He was a founding member of the avant-garde group "Les Nouveaux" during the 1930s and 40s in Lyon. Known for his geometric and lyrical abstraction, he enjoyed a great amount of public recognition in his day. An entire chapter was dedicated to him in the recently published Les Nouveaux ou La Modernité Prolongée by Alain Vollerin. Listed in Benezit, vol.3. Oil on Canvas, newly framed. Signed "Ant. Louis Claude Paviot was born in Lhuis in the Ain region of France in 1872. He studied in Paris under Jean-Paul Laurens and Doucet. A painter of landscapes, Paris and Lyon cityscapes, nudes, and floral still-lifes. He joined the Societe Lyonnais des Beaux Arts in 1896, exhibiting with them after the turn of the century. Born in Lyon, France in 1873, Godien began his studies at the Ecole Des Beaux-Arts de Lyon in 1888 studying with Tony Tollet, Carrand and Vernay. In 1896 he began exhibiting his works at the Salon in Lyon and then in Paris in 1899. A painter of portraits and Lyonnais Cityscapes, he also worked on engravings, book illustrations, fabric and tapestry designs, and designs for iron light fixtures. Listed in Benezit, vol. 6. Born in Milan in 1825, died in 1890. Enrolled at the Accademia di Belli Arti di Brera to study under Luigi Sabatelli, then left to participate in uprising against Austrian rule in 1848. Joined the defense of Rome in 1849, enlisted for Crimean War in 1855, and then fought for Garibaldi in campaign of 1859. Upon his return to Milan he received many commissions for Italian patriotic themes and portraits of important figures of the Risorgimento, including Victor Emmanuel II. In Vienna, he was awarded a medal in 1873.
