Frank Gehry 1992. 2 years after receiving the Pritzker Prize--the Nobel of architecture--he released the Gehry Collection for Knoll, causing a frenzy among collectors and designers. Drawing inspiration from wicker furniture and bushel baskets, Gehry designed a collection named after ice hockey terms and fashioned from wafer-thin strips of laminated wood, bent, woven, and curled into fluid, featherweight yet sturdy forms. Before the chairs had even been released to the public, MOMA had placed early production samples in a window display. All wood grains run in same direction for resilience. Thermo-set assembly glue provides structural rigidity without the need for metal connectors, while allowing for ergonomic movement and flexibility.

Designed by Harry Bertoia for Knoll® Harry Bertoia first met Florence Knoll Bassett (then Florence Schust) at Cranbrook Academy of Art. Years With his iconic seating collection, Harry Bertoia transformed industrial wire rods into a new furniture form. The events that made this work possible began a decade earlier at Cranbrook Academy of Art when Bertoia met Florence Knoll Bassett (then Florence Schust). Years later, the Italian-born designer was invited to work for Florence and her husband Hans Knoll. Bertoia was given the freedom to work on whatever suited him, without being held to a strict design agenda, and the result of this arrangement was the Bertoia Seating Collection (1952). Featuring a delicate filigreed appearance that’s supremely strong, these airy seats are sculpted out of steel rods. In his art, Bertoia experimented with open forms and metal work, and these chairs were an extension of that work. "If you look at the chairs, they are mainly made of air, like sculpture," said Bertoia. "Space passes through them." After designing his seating collection, Bertoia returned to focusing mostly on sculpture. His work was often used in projects by Eero Saarinen (another Cranbrook friend), notably at MIT and the Dulles International Airport. Manufactured by Knoll according to the original and exacting specifications of the designer. Made in Italy.

Design Verner Panton, 1959. Shell with upholstery and seat cushion, brushed stainless steel base. Made in Germany by Vitra. In 1958 he returned to Denmark full of unconventional ideas... one of which evolved into the iconic Heart Cone Chair. Defying gravity, the cone was both futuristic and shocking... so much so that when it was exhibited in a shop window in New York City police had to order its removal due to the traffic chaos its presence created. A comfortable club chair for everyday use, Vitra has faithfully re-issued this classic in close collaboration with the Panton estate. The Heart Cone Chair takes its name from its heart-shaped silhouette. 35" h | 40.5" w | 24.5" d $3,430.00 + free shipping in the continental U.S. (usually ships in 3-4 days).

I only wish it was a true vintage piece...but reissues are always in mint condition, right? ;)
