The Willow Chair with its decorative geometric tracery, is much more than just furniture. Designed by a masterful Scottish architect, it is quite clearly architectural in style. This entirely unique shape is at once imposing in its structural rigor, and slightly fantastic. A person seated in this chair would be partially hidden by the sides which wrap around, whist still leaving the occupant partial visibility through the tracery. This design was the result of a special commission for the interior of a Scottish coffee house. It affords a degree of privacy to its occupant, while making a rather alluring, enigmatic statement. Black lacquered, seat covered with leather.

Design Story Herman Miller turned to designers Don Chadwick and Bill Stumpf to design a totally new kind of chair. Chadwick's and Stumpf's previous collaboration had produced the groundbreaking Equa chair. The two designers began this development process with a clean slate, with no assumptions about form or material, but with some strong convictions about what a chair ought to do for a person. Ergonomically, it ought to do more than just sit there. It should actively intercede for the health of the person who sits in it longer than she should.

Design Story Alvar Aalto began designing furnishing in the late 1920s as a natural extension of his architectural projects. To Aalto, a piece of furniture was not simply an isolated object. He saw furniture as part of a harmonious interior. In fact, he described furniture and architecture as branches of the same tree.

Functional Art Three looks: The center section of the stool comes in three distinctively sculpted profiles. Either side up: The top surface and the smaller bottom surface are both concave. Compact size: The stool is 15 inches high; top diameter is 13 inches; bottom diameter is 11 inches. Design Story Ray Eames drew on her training as a sculptor to design a new kind of occasional piece for the lobby of the Time-Life Building in New York City. Eames walnut stools became her favorite seats and were liberally scattered about the Charles and Ray Eames home in Pacific Palisades. A museum curator once ordered two of these stools for his son and daughter. "Graduation gifts?" he was asked. "No," he said, "the kids are only five and three. But I want them to have the experience of growing up with something truly good that they can keep all their lives."

Availability: Black and white generally in stock, all other colors are custom made and take between 6-10 weeks to deliver Named after Michelin's mascot - Bibendum, (aka the Michelin Man), Eileen Gray created this utterly unique design in 1926. Characteristically this piece seems to offer no identifiable design lineage - except perhaps to the Michelin Man himself, and to a bedside table that she designed in the same year; Its circular top supported on a stand by a u-shaped base, share some structural similarity with the chair. The simple roundness of Bibendum's lines are in stark contrast, to the angularity of many other Bauhaus era furniture designs. Comparing it to the Grand Confort by Le Corbusier for example, it seems to be a playful almost ostentatious response to the reserved pragmatism of her teacher's design. Chrome plated steel base. Hardwood frame and sumptuous leather upholstery.
