A Word From The Artist The "Shift" vessels are a result of an exploration into form development that focussed on the visual and structural relationships between adjacent components, An unfamiliar form is revealed by the shifting action of fragments that previously created a familiar shape. The resulting forms are meant to reflect the energy and growth observed in nature. Each vessel consists of a series of segments that have been steam bent and subsequently machined and shaped by hand before final assembly. Some of the vessels feature finished surfaces that are a stark contrast to the clean lines of each form, yet suggest the ageing process wich is essential to the cycle of life.

Colour forms the foundation of Kate’s work upon which line, texture and form enhance. The focus of her research concentrated on the contrasting colours in flowers and linear motifs formed in plants and vegetation. By combining different materials, soft textures of woven Japanese silk braids with strong silver organic forms, Kate creates sculptural structures, which through her designs, she incites the wearer to interact with the jewellery. This is the resulting body of work from a Masters Degree, which Kate recently achieved from the Birmingham School of Jewellery.

The striking black patterns on the bag are “tear marks”, illustrating that the “grass” that the bag is made from has been pulled from the earth. This concept is explained in a humoristic cartoon, which comes with the bag and acts as a label. Each bag is hand made by the Swedish London based designer Olivia Monthan.
