I'm a rag rug artist, living and working on beautiful Waiheke Island in New Zealand (my studio, Hooked on Waiheke, is open every weekend from 12-4pm). I've been making rugs from recycled clothing and materials for many years and selling through galleries locally and in Auckland. I love making "something beautiful out of nothing" - cutting out the unusable parts of clothing and using the good bits for hooking into rugs or art for the wall. Commissions accepted and enjoyed.

The tradition of felted wool rugs originated in Iran in the Neolithic Age. It spanned the mountainous regions from Turkey to Mongolia where tribal nomads lived in felt-covered tents. The technique in Iran was practically extinct when Melina and Dodd Raissnia traveled to Iran together in search of felt makers. They are now using the same ancient technique to create felt rugs in Iran based on contemporary designs by Melina. For a look at the process watch our 15-minute film. You can also read an essay on the subject by Melina Raissnia for Turkotek.com. Peace Industry: Husband and wife team Melina and Dodd Raissnia are the principals and founders of Peace Industry. Before they discovered felt rugs in Iran they made peace flags.

Sunspiral Felt Rug by Melina Raissnia. The ancient method of felting is time consuming and difficult work, but it produces beautiful and durable goods. Big fluffs of dyed Nomadic sheep wool are positioned in the pattern on a canvas tarp, sprinkled with boiling water and rolled back and forth for several hours to create the thick and tightly felted rug. Each of these handmade rugs is accompanied by a video of the creative process.

Beautiful design with colourful patterns, Moroccan rugs use bright colors and alternating geometric patterns that make them both bold and attractive. Because of this, they are usually considered more informal than traditional Persian or Oriental rugs.

Chris Gustin's rag rugs are woven from cloth selvedges (an edge of fabric meant to be cut off and discarded) which are collected for her at weaving mills. These unique rugs are a little thicker than most cotton rag rugs and are easy to keep clean. Machine wash on gentle cycle in warm water with a mild detergent. Put in the dryer for five minutes to spin out excess water. Stretch flat on the ground to dry.
