"Living landscapes" was a major theme in 1960's design. Verner Panton, who was constantly searching for new ideas for the home, made a variety of especially interesting and original contributions to this theme, championing "more comfort, more of an experience, and more color". His Living Tower uses all three dimensions of a room. The organically shaped sculptural piece can be used at four different levels. Panton believed that it is important to seek harmony between people and their surroundings... the living tower fosters communication and interaction. Vitra originally produced this piece in very limited numbers in 1969, and in an amazing display of inspiration, does so once again.

Design Alexander Girard, 1963. Solid firwood, hand painted. Made in Poland by Vitra. Alongside Charles and Ray Eames as well as George Nelson, Alexander Girard was one of the decisive figures in post-War American design. The focus of his broad oeuvre was on textile design, and a key source of inspiration for him was his passion for the popular art of South America, Asia and East Europe. The Wooden Dolls, which Girard created for his own home in Santa Fe and made himself, are likewise inspired by his own extensive collection of works of popular art. Half decorative element, half toy, the Wooden Dolls were originally intended only for personal use. Based on documents and originals found in the Girard Estate held by the Vitra Design Museum, the partly joyful, partly grim-looking company of dolls is now coming out as a limited edition as a charming enhancement to any interior.

Design Verner Panton, 1959. Shell with upholstery and seat cushion, brushed stainless steel base. Made in Germany by Vitra. In 1958 he returned to Denmark full of unconventional ideas... one of which evolved into the iconic Heart Cone Chair. Defying gravity, the cone was both futuristic and shocking... so much so that when it was exhibited in a shop window in New York City police had to order its removal due to the traffic chaos its presence created. A comfortable club chair for everyday use, Vitra has faithfully re-issued this classic in close collaboration with the Panton estate. The Heart Cone Chair takes its name from its heart-shaped silhouette. 35" h | 40.5" w | 24.5" d $3,430.00 + free shipping in the continental U.S. (usually ships in 3-4 days).

Right now, I'm sitting here eating my Skinny Cow ice cream sandwich, watching Flight of the Conchords, submitting sites to my favorite Social Networking websites, all the while my Noguchi Akari lamp is lighting my way...I adore this lamp more than any of my other mid-century modern pieces. I only wish it was a true vintage piece...but reissues are always in mint condition, right? ;)

With the series "Easy Edges", from 1972, he succeeded in lending such everyday materials as cardboard a new aesthetic dimension. Although they appear unbelievably simple "Easy Edges" are constructed with the architect's care as well as being very robust and stable. Approximately 60 layers of cardboard are held together by hidden screws with a fibreboard edging. Four models from the series - Side Chair, Wiggle Side Chair, Dining Table and Low Table Set - are now being produced by Vitra. Set of three nesting tables as shown.
