The Gamecock Tailfeather pin was created as Grainger was completing the sculpture of a gamecock for the celebration of his hometown's bicentennial in 2000. The life-sized bird is on permanent display at Sumter, SC's Patriot Hall. The town's namesake is General Thomas Sumter, known as the Gamecock of Revolutionary War days. Two inches long.

It was a Christmas gift for my wife Floride in 1995 that started the jewelry collection. Now you can see it in 40 or so of the finest jewelry retailers in the country. Like my sculpture, each jewelry design is of or about a bird, and each starts with a piece of wood and a sharp blade. Some designs strive for a particular artistic element, while others emerge while a sculpture is in progress.

Grainger's comments: "All of the hummingbirds I've seen represented in jewelry or sculpture support themselves with the bird's head buried in a flower, diminishing the attractiveness of both. I chose to let the petal of a flower support the tail of the bird instead." The Hummingbird is one and 3/4 inches tall. This item of jewelry should be worn as pictured, so the bill of the bird is nearly horizontal.
