The Label: The Texas native and Parson’s graduate has been designing girly but smart clothes with lots of embellishments—embroidery, piping, beading, and other trimming details—since she launched her collection in 1996. Popular among young socialites and celebrities, including First Daughters Jenna and Barbara Bush, Rose frequently juxtaposes fabrics in unusual ways—terry cloth with lace, for example—to give her classic feminine silhouettes something unexpected, and a more modern edge. “Fall got very serious,” Lippes said a few days before his spring show. “I want to have fun with clothes.” And what’s more festive than spangles? Lippes opened with a shirtdress covered in punchy black and white paillettes and a kicky ombré skirt. A series of strong black, white and gray looks followed, but color proved to be key. Fluorescents — fuschia, electric blue and yellow — inspired by MoMA’s recent Color Chart exhibition brightened up everything from a silk romper to a knit tank embroidered with multicolored discs meant to imitate Smarties candy. Yes, the collection had a sweet side, but of the delightfully sportif sort, via tennis sweaters and terrific silk running shorts. Overall, the collection was as upbeat and interesting as it was wearable. Well, for the most part. “I don’t know where you’re going in this,” said Lippes of a yellow dress fully embroidered in chunky Lucite baubles. “Probably Miami.”

Nicole Miller’s affinity for far-off places is well-known by now. A different locale inspires just about every season, some more successfully than others. For spring, it was Haiti and its voodoo culture. She channeled the island’s spirit in colorful sequins, beadwork and prints, which worked well on asymmetric dresses and skirts — the less complicated the better. Even Miller’s most literal use of the Haitian motif, on a beaded voodoo doll print dress, had a certain charm. Still, for all of her fancy pattern play, the tailored sportswear, a striped boyfriend blazer paired with harem pants in particular, was the most spellbinding.

Geren Ford, inspired by trips to Sydney, Buenos Aires and Italy’s Isle of Capri, stayed true to the West Coast vibe of her flowy separates — silk Ts, billowy shorts — but punched up the collection with pops of color (bright blue, orange) and hardware, like the metal rivets running down an adorable teal shift dress.

The Label: Desperate to find comfy, stylish clothes to wear during her pregnancy in the early sixties, Parisian Sonia Rykiel decided to make some of her own. In 1968, she opened her own boutique on the Left Bank from which she hawked her covetable knits. The American press dubbed her the “Queen of Knits.” From there, she proceeded to invert seams, de-line looks, and add other non-precious, fun effects to her clothes, winning her a following among the fashion-forward folks. The Designer: Born in Paris in 1930, Sonia Rykiel had no formal design training except window dressing when she was a teenager. But in 1985, the French government showed its appreciation by awarding her the Legion d’Honneur. Today, her daughter Nathalie, who serves as the company’s creative director, infuses much of her mother’s cheekiness into the label—she added sex toys to the retail offerings at their freestanding stores.
