For 70 years, the Savoy vase, designed by Finnish architect and furniture designer Alvar Aalto, has been one of the most famous pieces of glass in history. In 1936, Aalto anonymously entered his vase design for a competition at the Paris World’s Fair. Aalto, Finnish for “wave” created an original glass vase with wavy lines and whimsical freeform design that to many suggests the undulating profile of a Finnish lake. b. 1967, Danish Textile Designer. A seat made from Finnish paper twine – inspired by the nests of the weaver bird. This piece was created using a technique where Heuser hand-knitted a three-dimensional ball shape, creating an open mesh with large stitches, subsequently filling the ball. The twine is entirely untreated, nor has it been combined with any other materials. Heuser worked the thread to make it create a series of interesting intermeshing patterns when knitted loosely.

Better View is a roll-up black-out curtain by Finnish designer Elina Aalto of Fiasko Design. The perforated city views currently available are Shinjuku, Tokyo, and Kallio, Helsinki. Each piece is custom made by hand. Better View is part of SAUMA [Design as Cultural Interface], a travelling exhibition produced by the Finnish Cultural Institute in New York. SAUMA (Finnish for "seam") presents 20 works of innovative contemporary design from Finland. True to the typically Finnish form-and-function tradition, SAUMA works explore usability, user experience and the design process itself.
