First worn by Japanese court nobles centuries ago, today the beloved lightweight yukata is often worn to summer festivals, fireworks displays or as simple night attire. Made in Osaka from 100% cotton with a traditional woven flower girl motif. Self belt. Sizing may vary slightly.
Early 20th c. three-quarter-length kimono.
Rust and scarlet red, black, white, green, grey & yellow.
Floral print with large medallions.
The bold pattern brings to mind a Celia Birtwell textile, though the robe obviously predates the designer's work.
Fabric is a heavy silk or rayon jacquard, figured in a Japanese "rolling-waves" design.
Fully-lined in a crosshatch-printed pink chintz.

Almost entirely fabulous collection--my only serious negative vote is for the Giant Morbid Wedding Cupcake [if you look @the whole thing you will immediately spot the GMWC, trust me on that]. Elsewise it's marvellous, does a lot of self-referencing of her past collections--w/ a primary emphasis on 80s but w/ some nods to her 70s Alley Cat & 60s Paraphernalia stuff. Always a great designer, one of the world's best cutters & fitters, Betsey Johnson.
What an amazing thing, from a collection created over a decade ago & fabricated from TIE DYED POLYESTER, no less, in as previous to last century's fashion as could be fashioned--especially if you surreptitiously crossed it w/ a little edge of New Look. Outstanding, again from the Gothic show at FIT.
