Philippe Starck is building a house of ghosts. After the success of his Louis Ghost Armchair, Starck has now brought that same aesthetic daring to his Charles Ghost Counter Stool (2005). Another transparent monoblock in polycarbonate, the stool has a round seat pan from which the gently curving legs extend, recalling the fluid lines and the graceful profile of 19th-century chairs. Offering a comfortable perch, the Charles, like the Louis, can be used in nearly any environment, indoors or out.

The epitome of French caf¿ life, it's rumored that Xavier Pauchard's Marais Collection (1934) was created for use in the weather forecasting room on a battleship. We asked the manufacturer about this, but even their records are unclear. Still, we do know that after its possible time at sea, the Marais was supplied to bars and brasseries by breweries in exchange for selling their beer. This arrangement ended in the 1970s, but that didn't stop the demand for these durable chairs and stools made in France. Crafted of sheet steel, the Marais Stool is available in two heights, 18" and 30", and in either varnished gunmetal grey or powder coated lemon and vermillion.

Crafted from a single piece of injection-molded polycarbonate, the medallion back could only be created thanks to Kartell's accumulated knowledge, built over years of innovation in plastic manufacturing. Sleek and sturdy, the baroque-style chair is transparent, and coordinates with the Louis Ghost Armchair. Addressing the design of the collection to the Dallas Morning News, Starck once commented that it "has a mix of materials and styles based on our shared memories. We all own this piece in a way. The Executive was originally made of fiberglass but was later updated in polyurethane to take advantage of the technical advances in plastics. The feel of this classic seat, however, remains unchanged. The molded shell flexes slightly with the sitter and the contoured plywood seat supported by metal or wood legs.
