Perhaps one of the most practical products for urban dwellers: window applications by Emma Jeffs. I had a friend who was living in a beautiful loft apartment in San Fran, but the only view from his window was of the freeway off ramp, literally 3 feet from the edge of his place. When traffic was at a standstill, hundreds of folks would be able to see into his apartment without effort. His solution: cover the windows with duct tape and trash bags. Goodness. I don’t think I need to comment on what a difference an Emma Jeffs window application would have made to the apartment (and his sanity).

How often do you see a crib like the Casa Kids Ola! Crib? If you do your research you’ll realize not too often. This crib is a triple threat if I’ve ever seen one…the crib converts to both a toddler bed and a twin bed. As your child outgrows the Ola! Crib, the vertical side rails can be easily replaced with hardwood conversion rails, creating the new, playful Ola! Toddler Bed. And what do you do with the side rails you removed? Send them to the landfill? Nope, they become the headboard and footboard of a new Ola! Twin Bed, to be used throughout adolescence or as a great guest bed. Such longevity and a great financial investment!

Popsicle stick inspired legs on chairs, a toddler bed that converts to a chair, a “Book Buggee“…yes, the folks at Pkolino certainly know how to make efficient, practical, and kid friendly modern tot furniture. After spending many days attached to my three year old niece (we are good buddies) I have come to appreciate the height of a toddler and the furniture that fits their needs (while also looking good and saving space!). Since I read far too many stories over the past 10 days I think the most appropriate gift I can give my little gal pal is the book buggee. What a treasure!

Almost no other animal enjoys such popularity as the elephant. Admired for its majestic size and loved for its proverbial good-humor, it is part of our everyday experience as a child's cuddly toy, a storybook character and a majestic creature. Charles and Ray Eames also succumbed to their charms and in 1945 designed a toy elephant made of plywood. However, it never made it into mass production. The Eames elephant is now available for the first time in a plastic version for those it was originally intended for: children.

I just recently traveled through Morocco and was dumbfounded by the array of colors, textiles, and details the artisans exhibited in their work. I saw a number of poofs while there and thought, “This is brilliant! It is decorative and functional, yet totally fun and different…if only I had more space to get one home.” Well, zid zid brought my dreams to life plus they added more of a contemporary edge to their poofs which is just what I wanted.

The Grand Illusion is a handmade side table of PMMA acrylic. All Illusion tables are handmade, individual and unique. The design gives the impression of a table cloth on a round table. However, the object uses the structural strength of the folded material to create a magical and surprising experience - an illusion.

I just about hit the ceiling in excitement (see adjacent photo) when I saw the new Marcel Wanders wallpapers from Graham & Brown. Marcel’s pieces are remarkably bold and rich, creating a wall that is no longer just a wall but a showcase for design. I can’t even begin to fathom how dramatically different my place would be if I had his extraordinary pieces on the walls of my apartment. I’d probably be glued to the walls in love.

Modern bedding is easy to find, as are fine Italian linens. Catching them in bed together, however, can be a challenge. Sanford Burrows' streamlined designs are meticulously embroidered onto their linens, adding texture and warmth to each piece. The base is an Egyptian cotton fabric produced by one of Italy's leading textile companies to ensure the finest quality and craftsmanship. While techniques are traditional, Sanford Burrows designs are decidedly modern. We like to think of it as modern art that's fit for a wall, but made for your bed.

Whoa, Thomas Paul. I can’t keep up with all the new lighting options! From sconces to pendants to floor lamps to table lamps, to new patterns to the color options. I feel overwhelmed but extremely excited all at once. I am a big fan of layered pendant lamps so his Dexter Pendant Lamp does a number for me. As with all of his pieces, I have to simmer down take a deep breath. Thomas Paul is such a master of color!

I have never been much of a chandelier person until fairly recently when I decided that maybe a simple chandelier was just what my apartment needed to give it a little extra flare. Then DuffyLondon Canvas Lightboxes came around and my visions were solidified into a hip reality (but, I still have to purchase one). Before the DuffyLondon “enlightenment” I was dragging my heels on the hunt for chandeliers. I saw a few online and in a store that were just too gaudy for my taste and small apartment. Imagine how embarrassing would it be to have guests hit their heads on your oversized chandelier?! The solution in so many ways: a DuffyLondon Print Wall Light.

The decal trend is really quite perfect for kids/babies. They are such a fun way to decorate the walls while also leaving the option open to take them down once baby grows up. I am smitten by the simplicity of the Boodalee Tree Wall Graphics...white is the way to go!

I am kicking myself now that I see the Gus Design Group Thompson Chairs in walnut. I can’t tell you how long I was on a hunt for the perfect white chairs. For months and months I debated over one chair and the next. I loved the Gus Design Group Thompson Chairs in white and natural but just wasn’t sold on the color of the wood. Now, after having purchased 10 vintage modern chairs off Ebay which I am going to have to strip the material, sand and stain (aka a major project), the Gus Design Group Thompson Chairs in walnut have made it to DP. Aye carumba! I love the contrast of the white and walnut and the shape looks so simple yet sophisticated. Ho hum. Maybe in my next life.

For all gray lovers out there…Unison’s Fall ‘08 Collection includes charcoal bedding! Yes, I ran around in circles too when I first saw the images. While working in customer service I had many a call asking about the various gray duvet options we have and I am so proud/pleased to say that we have another beautiful piece to add to the list. The charcoal striped “Porter” print is a great clean and minimalist choice for guys and gals alike. Considering that I am going through a major gray loving frenzy right now, this is at the top of my wish list!

STAACH has created just the right solution to my kitchen woes: the Cain Collection Stool. I have what some would call the most vertical (and smallest!) kitchen around. We have little to no counter space but we do have cabinets! Cabinets that nearly reach the sky. The issue with this: 1.) items are notorious for falling off the shelves and onto our noggins, an event we have termed a “kitch-a-lanch” and 2.) it is a bit difficult to reach a bowl when it is 5 five feet above your head. That is where the Cain Collection Stool comes in to save the day. The stool not only adds an eye catching yet simple element to our space, but it plays an utterly important role in the general function of our kitchen.

Whoa, Blu Dot’s Wonder Wall cabinet storage options just solved my current small apartment dilemma! I was just discussing with a friend how I needed a bookshelf or cabinet for a small 4.5” wide wall in my living room area. I envisioned something that I could attach to the wall so as to avoid making my place feel even smaller and so I could fit a small chair (the only space for a chair) to the side. Of course, I also needed something that had drawers or a cabinet space so I could hind any unnecessary clutter. Then the Blu Dot Wonder Wall appeared. Crazy how right when I have that "a ha!" moment and know what is needed for my space, it then shows up on DP.

Although the term “wabi-sabi” alludes to the notion that nothing is perfect, I think Jenny Sauer of three sheets 2 the wind did a pretty darn perfect job with the composition of her new bedding pieces. Can you imagine relying on your eyes and hands to screen print one of your designs down the middle or straight across a massive duvet? It might sound easy, but no, no, no. It is not. It takes one mighty sharp eye and a skillful set of hands to get it just right. Good show, Jenny Sauer! I think Harry Allen needs to make a resin cast of your special hands.

Another item to add to your MASH Studios crush/lineup: the LAX Bookcase. Without question, a good bookcase is a timeless component to any modern apartment. Designs like the LAX Bookcase are the essence of this classic notion: no fussy ornamentation, no visible hardware, just a clean and simple way to display your coveted books and treasures. Heck, we have three massive bookcases in our DP offices and I wouldn’t be surprised if we wanted to add more!

Thomas Paul has such a knack for color with regards to everything…pillows, rugs and now lighting! When I first saw his pillows I had over a handful of favorites to don my sofa. Then I saw his rugs and imagined covering all of my floor space with pieces. If that was the case no hardwood would be seen! Now I imagine moving upwards and illuminating my ceilings and tables with his lighting collection. From my top ten list of lighting favorites I think one of my chief picks is the Louis II Floor Lamp, or maybe I might prefer the Gus Table Lamp, actually the Wide Drum Pendant is awesome, and then of course I can’t leave out the Ting Table Lamp. Ok, so again I can’t make up my mind.
