Nicole Millers affinity for far-off places is well-known by now. A different locale inspires just about every season, some more successfully than others. For spring, it was Haiti and its voodoo culture. She channeled the islands spirit in colorful sequins, beadwork and prints, which worked well on asymmetric dresses and skirts the less complicated the better. Even Millers most literal use of the Haitian motif, on a beaded voodoo doll print dress, had a certain charm. Still, for all of her fancy pattern play, the tailored sportswear, a striped boyfriend blazer paired with harem pants in particular, was the most spellbinding.

Thuy Pham and Miho Aoki took their preppy chic to the beach, and a delicate cotton blouse tucked into slouchy navy-and-white striped pants was pitch-perfect, though heavily embellished necklines and Boca-esque jacquards were unsuccessful.

What girl doesnt want to look pretty? To that end, Ashleigh Verrier gives her plenty, much of which is beautiful chiffons embroidered with crystal butterflies and flowers; a terrific vinyl frock raincoat with velvet thorn trim over a lace-detailed chiffon blouse and bloom skirt. Sometimes, however, pretty turned too precious. Otherwise, Verrier offered scant news save for some appealing lean-cut linen dresses.

This was Lagerfeld at his savvy best, on one hand lavishing the clothes with ample decoration as if heralding that tough times aside, his ladies have nothing to worry about, while on the other hand celebrating the dressed-up end of his Chanel range, no kooky kid stuff to confuse those ladies should they start to feel skittish. And he still infused the lineup with youthful charm, pinned largely on liberal doses of pink. Suits came in every conceivable variation: with jackets long and lean, full and swingy or cropped into tiny boleros. Dresses ranged from a classic shift to short, saucy knit numbers, and Lagerfeld gave a nod or two to the sportswear set with racy black pants looks. As for the tweeds du jour, they came both traditional and delightfully twisted, the latter in delicate woven tulle ribbon and squiggled with rubber. Evening arrived on a cloud of hazy blue chiffon here, a bower of silvery pink camellias there.

The Label: Desperate to find comfy, stylish clothes to wear during her pregnancy in the early sixties, Parisian Sonia Rykiel decided to make some of her own. In 1968, she opened her own boutique on the Left Bank from which she hawked her covetable knits. The American press dubbed her the Queen of Knits. From there, she proceeded to invert seams, de-line looks, and add other non-precious, fun effects to her clothes, winning her a following among the fashion-forward folks. The Designer: Born in Paris in 1930, Sonia Rykiel had no formal design training except window dressing when she was a teenager. But in 1985, the French government showed its appreciation by awarding her the Legion dHonneur. Today, her daughter Nathalie, who serves as the companys creative director, infuses much of her mothers cheekiness into the labelshe added sex toys to the retail offerings at their freestanding stores.

How appropriate for Gossip Girls Leighton Meester to be sitting front row at Jason Wu as the young designer turned out a collection of polished, ladylike looks inspired by a business trip to Japan, where he fell in love with the energy of Tokyo. It came through in saturated color, from a delicate fuchsia knit T to a rainbow of frocks. Known for his eveningwear, Wu did not disappoint, with an array of beautiful, easy gowns that were young and fresh, and sexy sheath dresses with French knots created by hand. Moving his collection forward, Wu ventured into sportswear with cashmere knits, unstructured jackets and shorts all rendered with his sophisticated hand.
