Tim Hull began working as a design artist in 1993 and opened his own gallery and studio in 2000. His medium during that time was gas-fired reduction clay. In 2004 he expanded his focus and relocated to a home studio where he is working with handmade paper and wood forms to create dimensional works of art. The use of paper and its wealth of possibilities gives the fiber a full status of artistic creation. The materials, color and design characterize his own very modern and minimalist esthetic works of art.

My first encounter with a potters wheel occurred in high school. We all have those moments when our awareness is expanded, and we begin to see in a different way. Early on, clay was that portal for me. Since then it has been a constant source of enticing music, calling me to listen to the rhythms held in the creative dance.

Kenneth Standhardt creates these vessels on the potters wheel. When a vessel is leather-hard he creates up to five thousand individual indentations on the surface. He uses handmade steel tools to gradually create even, geometric patterns, then fires each one in an outdoor raku kiln. As soon as the pieces are removed from the firing, while theyre still glowing red, theyre buried in a mound of sawdust. This treatment gives the pots their soft, carbon-colored finish. Standhardts work is greatly inspired by a particular style of primitive vessel-making that involved pressing a layer of clay onto the interior surface of a basket.

Natskallen is hand thrown thinly of English stoneware clay. The decoration consists of three to four layers of slipping (clay dye). The slipping is layered using a wide brush. In this way the artist achieves depth in the decoration. The dry expression of the outside contrasts with the dark iron glazing on the inside of the form. The bowl is fired at 1280 degrees centigrade. The glazing is non-toxic and impervious to water. The Natskallen is a 100% unique product. Every single bowl is hand thrown with the utmost care and has its own individual expression. Not one is like any other. Both colour and form vary so you will always be able to choose your own special bowl. The bowl that fits both your personality and the surroundings in which it is placed.

Each leaf of this necklace is individually hand built with colored porcelain and strung with matching glass seed beads. Using a laminating technique, the artist builds a loaf of pattern with various colors of wet clay. She then slices through the layers to reveal distinctive and singular designs. All color and pattern is in the clay itself and the final finish is achieved without the use of glaze. Necklace is 23 inches long.
