Natskallen is hand thrown thinly of English stoneware clay. The decoration consists of three to four layers of slipping (clay dye). The slipping is layered using a wide brush. In this way the artist achieves depth in the decoration. The dry expression of the outside contrasts with the dark iron glazing on the inside of the form. The bowl is fired at 1280 degrees centigrade. The glazing is non-toxic and impervious to water. Every single bowl is hand thrown with the utmost care and has its own individual expression. Not one is like any other. Both colour and form vary so you will always be able to choose your own special bowl. The bowl that fits both your personality and the surroundings in which it is placed.

The Burl Collection has been expanded to three glaze colors and 5 different pieces. Made in small batch mutiples - each handbuilt piece is unique. The sizes are approximate and the glazes vary but they each highlight a woodgrain pattern and glossy glaze. The chocolate is the most intense of the colors with alot of variation and movement in the glaze on stoneware. Aqua is more subtle with some of the bare clay occasionally coming through and the woodgrain not as pronounced - also stoneware. And the oyster is the most refined in porcelain with an creamy glossy glaze and a delicate appeal. . Offered in three plate sizes (Platter, Plate and Soap Dish), a small, flat bowl and set of dipping bowls - the photos represent the overall look and color of the Burls but each one is as unique and attractive as you are.

Influenced by the energy of Early American cobalt decoration, owners Priscilla Palmer and Jim Leavitt founded Emerson Creek Pottery in 1977. Priscilla developed the unique technique of applying natural pigments to an absorbent glaze with a Japanese Sumi-e brush. The spontaneity of the brush stroke, combined with the accuracy of design yields our distinctively recognizable style. Priscilla's deep love of the natural world provides a multitude of organic designs for all of Emerson Creek's pottery. Our ceramic pottery has been featured at Monticello, Mt. Vernon and the Smithsonian Institute, as well as in fine homes across America. We have had the pleasure of designing customized pottery patterns for numerous clubs and organizations.

Helen has drawn inspiration for her work from a variety of areas. During her travels in South-western United States she visited a number of Pueblo Potteries in New Mexico, and was especially taken by the shapes and designs produced by Martina Martinez and her descendants particularly Native American wedding vases. I wanted to capture the quality of their style, handmade pieces giving the impression of something quite precious but without being highly glazed." I find Raku an exciting way of firing, and I feel that it makes each piece quite individual, as the 'cracks' have a life of the own.
