Lau Lu La Toy and Hoshi 2004 23"h x 9"w x 7"d Lilly Yeh, my professor of art history at the Philadelphia College of Art, would often say, “You can tell the true nature of a culture by how they treat their women.” She would speak of the decadence of the Han Dynasty, when consumption was erotic. (A real beauty had pale skin and a delicate cough.) Like Lilly Yeh, Lau Lu La Toy is a close observer of mores who hopes to profit from American styles. To that end, her granddaughter is here packaged as a consumer confection. In the market, she asks of passersby, “Isn’t she a perfect little doll for rich soon-to-be-husband? She bring much luck to family.”

Lisa Lichtenfels studied traditional oil painting at an early age, attended the Governor’s School while a teenager and continued her education at the Philadelphia College of Art. There she met Judy Jampell, who was becoming well known for her three dimensional soft-sculpted facades. Inspired, Lisa was going to be an illustrator until the prospect of independent animation and filmmaking fascinated her. Graduating with majors in Illustration and Film, she was immediately hired by the Disney Studios as an apprentice animator.

The raised decoration on these vases is so extraordinary that the artisans chose to leave them otherwise undecorated. Our examples, modeled in white porcelain with raised relief, depict three flowers that are particularly prized in Chinese culture. The clutch of graceful articulated spider chrysan­the­mums symbolize autumn and an easy life after retirement. The peonies, mixed with sprays of larkspur, represent spring, health, and honor. The gardenia blossoms are emblematic of the month of November, and are well known for their intoxicating fragrance. Clear glaze on the pure white underbody has subtle undertones that reflect light and cast a luminous moon glow, especially in a darkened room.
