"blood on the leaves/ and blood at the roots"- strange fruit, billie holiday made to order. please allow a few days for production. this new collection is an offshoot of the noir collection- jeweled fascinators shaped like fruits or berries in this case. three sets of handformed copper leaves, hammered wire stems and berries made of opaque czech glass in black and jet swarovski crystals- edging an abstract mound of cherries in black czech glass and jet faceted crystal. wirewrapped securely to a dark brown barrette. 4" diameter. barrette is 2" handmade (for a one of kind lady) by anna bronwyn, pulp tart jewelry. "strange fruit" is a poem written by abel meeropol that was made famous in song form by billie holiday. the poem is a condemnation of racist violence- specifically the lynching of african americans- and the chillingly dark lyrics are cradled gently, are even made beautiful, by holiday's wounded vocal. it is a song that never fails to move me. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strange_Fruit http://www.strangefruit.org as an expression of my gratitude for this song, 15% of all strange fruit fascinator sales will be donated to the us human rights network (http://www.ushrnetwork.org/about_us).
