The uli uli adds thrill to hula. They can be used singly or in pairs, by both women and men, from the most playful to the fiercest hula dances. Small gourds from the la`amea tree are hollowed out and filled with ali`i poe seeds to make a rhythmic sound. The uli uli is finished off with a yellow feather center, surrounded by a halo of red feathers in an "up & down" design.
