Flora Fauna Series
Description
Julie Jerman-Melka..Flying Anvil Designs:
My Flora Fauna Series is about the organic matter of plant life. The forms do not represent a specific plant form but they do give a sense of the flora and fauna in a natural setting.
The metals I use are sterling and 18K gold. The metals are hammer formed, forged, granulation added, patinated, and finally stones are set in place.
Granulation is an ancient technique used by artisans more than 5,000 years ago in Egypt and Rome. It involves forming tiny metal spheres and joining them to the surface of the metal to enhance and add a distinctively rich appearance. I use granulation as if it were a tiny dew drop upon the plant forms.
Each piece is unique because of slight variations in size, shape, surface treatment and placement of the granules, similar to the flora and fauna on the forest floor.
