These Mary Janes can be made as either shoes with a jute (or hemp) sole, or as cozy slippers. The jute/hemp sole holds up rather well. In fact, the more they're worn, the more the fibers mesh with one another and the more solid the sole becomes. I wouldn't recommend hiking or splashing through puddles with them, of course, but for just general wear they're wonderful!
