The name Henrietta means "queen" or "ruler," and Henrietta Kanengeiser was an undisputed Queen in the fashion world. Don't recognize the name? Probably because you know her better as late designer extraordinaire Hattie Carnegie. She changed her surname from Kanengeiser to honor her mentor, Andrew Carnegie, and she obtained her nickname at 16 while making hats at Macy's Department Store, hence "Hattie." While she was a fashion power house in the 1930s through the 1950s, heading an operation that employed over 1,000 workers and did millions of dollars of business at a time when most women were homemakers, she also designed amazing costume jewelry to complement her clothing.
