When Heidi brought out the models for this weeks Project Runway challenge, everyone was bewildered by their crazy hairstyles ranging from a faux-hawk, a beehive, a birds nest, huge fro. The challenge: create an avant-garde look using the €˜dos as inspiration. After being paired off, visions clashed, frustration ran rampant, and drama abounded. Victorya and Jillian lamented over their lack of time management skills, Rami acted like a big draping bully and his relentless nagging caused poor Sweet P to break down in tears, while €˜Team Fierce€™- Chris and Christian, happily mused over how seamlessly their fierceness blended together. Just as tense nerves were beginning to ease, Tim got them riled back up again by informing the group that they would also be making a ready-to wear piece which must express the essence of the avant-garde design.
More drama, more whining, more fighting, more groaning, more designers on the brink of implosion, and more suspense than we could handle! The judges, along with guest judge Albertta Feretti, were unanimously on €˜Team Fierce,€™ giving the win to Chris and Christian. Rami was rightfully criticized for playing it safe and showing off his draping skills (YET AGAIN). However, it looks like Rami will go on to drape another day, because Kit- yes, KIT, the golden child of this show, the one who always gets it right, the one whose vision EVERYONE admires, the one who had NEVER been in the bottom, was the one to hear those chill-inducing, harrowing words: €œyou€™re out.€We were shocked, dismayed, aghast, and utterly speechless! Luckily, Stylehive got the chance to talk to the latest bootee ask the question that haunted us all night- WHAT WENT WRONG??? READ ON OR SCROLL TO THE BOTTOM FOR A €œTHANKS FOR THE MEMORIES€ SLIDESHOW OF ALL KIT'S CREATIONS.Stylehive: What was the overall Project Runway experience like for you?Kit: Well I went on Project Runway because I thought I would make it to Bryant Park for sure, like there was no doubt in my mind, so last night was disappointing for me definitely. But after the run I had - I was so consistent, never in the bottom - never in the top either though! But I just felt really strong about my performance on the show.Stylehive: Thoughts on last night€™s challenge?
Kit:I was so hyped! I mean I love avant-garde art, and fashion, and music, and literature, everything! So I was really excited. Stylehive:How did you feel about the judges criticisms?
Kit:Well the funny thing is- once I got on the runway, I saw my garment in a completely different perspective. When Heidi Klum was first on the runway she said €˜you should make an artistic and conceptual gown, take your imagination as far as possible€™- so I did! But you know, I learned a lot on the runway from the judges- they said my fabric looked cheap- and I was like €˜who cares if it looks cheap? It€™s not fashion, it€™s art. I€™m not trying to sell a dress; I€™m trying to convey a really great idea. And that€™s always been a point of contention for me in my own personal work, so it was really cool to see what the judges had to say, know where I was coming from, and take that away with me- that was my prize from Project Runway. Stylehive: How did you feel about having Alberta Ferretti as a guest judge?
Kit: It was awesome! And actually it would have been cool to be able to talk with her, and I speak Italian, so I wanted so badly to be leaving the show and just got an talk to her! But I was like €˜I€™m so nervous now, I€™ll never speak good Italian!€™ Stylehive: At the end of the episode you said you had no regrets- but seriously, if you could go back and do the challenge over again, is there anything you€™d do differently?
Kit: In hindsight, I definitely would have gone a different way, not with the idea, but with the fabrication, because I feel like it was really too loud. But, I don€™t think I would have known that had I not learned what I learned on the runway. So that€™s why I have no regret, because, for me, winning Project Runway is really rad, but I also did Project Runway as the first of many steps to really push my career in the right direction. And the learning that I got from that show, and especially in that challenge- it€™s hard to say, looking back now, I€™m like €˜oh I totally should€™ve stayed€™ and I should€™ve said €˜Ricky you€™re out!€™ and €˜I€™m better for the competition!€™ But I don€™t think I would have known to do that without the lesson: is it the chicken or the egg? I don€™t know. Stylehive: You have consistently created amazing designs throughout this competition. Why do you think you were sent home and not others who have several mis-steps under their belts?
Kit: I don€™t know- well, what you didn€™t see last night on the episode was more of the banter that goes on on the runway. And the judges of course ask, between myself and Ricky, €˜who do you think should go home?€™ And my response was €˜well as far as this whole competition is concerned, I think I€™ve done a really good job and I don€™t think that I should be the one sent home.€™ And they, of course, said €˜no, for this challenge, who do you think should go home?€™ And I€™m a very honest person and I€™m a really hard critic on myself- which I think is good- and I said €˜I should go home.€™ So I think that was a big thing for the judges, but ultimately I feel like the judges have a responsibility to keep the integrity of the competition as tough as the designers themselves. And I really felt like it was in their power. Stylehive:I do these interviews every week with the castoffs, and almost every single one has praised your vision and sense of style. What are your best style tips?
Kit: I think the most important thing is to know you€™re body shape and then you can wear whatever you want. And I think really getting to know your own shape, and your coloring, and not being in size- denial, whether it€™s wearing too big of clothes or too small of clothes, allows a person the freedom to wear whatever they want and that€™s the best ay to have style. I think that another good thing of style is not to just buy things because they€™re popular, or they€™re in a store and they€™re selling a lot. I feel like when women go out shopping, it€™s hard not to want to buy things that are like cookie-cutter shapes. I think people just have to be really honest with themselves and really, really confident. Like if you put on something and it doesn€™t fit right, it€™s not like €˜oh it€™s on sale and it doesn€™t fit right€™ or €˜oh it€™s designer couture, it doesn€™t fit right, but I€™m gonna wear it.€ No, be really honest and really confident, like €œthis is really cool but it doesn€™t fit me.€ The size thing is totally dumb, because people will be like €˜oh these are size 27 jeans€™ and it€™s like €˜well you€™d look like a 27 if you were wearing a 28, actually.€™ Stylehive: What€™s next for you?
Kit: Well I€™m really excited because I€™m already making Project Runway work for me in that I€™m going to be doing my first ready to wear collection, since I come from a custom design background. And I€™ve launched a hair accessories line that I€™m selling at Studio and Fred Segal in Santa Monica, and online at Kitpistol.com, and I€™m using the proceeds from selling the accessories to assist in funding my collection.
