You probably know O€™Neal McKnight because you have rocked out to his song "Check Your Coat" at the club or have seen the video on VH1 or MTV. What you probably didn€™t know is when you look at Diddy, Russell Simmons, or Usher and say, €œDamn, that man has style,€� it€™s likely because O€™Neal McKnight made them so. Wardrobe stylist for so many events, videos, and mega-stars that I don€™t have enough space to list them, O€™Neal has now transformed himself into the ultimate hybrid of music and fashion. Stepping out into the limelight, he told me what it€™s like to live in within the community of superstardom. Oh, and by the way, the kid can dance. Really, really dance.
O€™Neal and I met at a nondescript Italian restaurant and I immediately loved the way he silently glides past the hostess€™ table selection and seats himself where he sees fit. Once seated, he reveals that all he ever wanted to do is dance on Soul Train and meet his idol, Michael Jackson. Guess what? He has done both. Actually, he has more than just met his idol, he knows him pretty well and says of the King of Pop, €œMost people don€™t realize that Michael has very thick skin. Very thick skin.€� I love, love, love MJ so it was fun to dish with someone who actually knows him.
His current video has some pretty impressive music biz cameos including Russell Simmons and
Swiss Beatz. You can€™t help but think that these major props from major players is sort of like them blessing his music career. I asked him how it feels to have all these people come out for him, to which he simply replied, €œIt feels good.€�
But let€™s talk fashion for a minute, because he has had some major style moments. €œI did the entire wardrobe for Puff and
Snoop€™s European tour. For one month, I did everything for them - dinners, press junkets, events. The first ten nights of the tour, there was an after party every night! But the most rewarding thing I have done was styling the Usher 8701 album cover. My thing was that I was trying to create an iconic album cover, something people would remember, and I did.€�
O€™Neal is truly that collision of where fashion meets music. I mean, do you know any other artists that dress like him? And he plans to share his style by one day by launching a line of jeans and t-shirts, claiming everyone loves a good t-shirt or a good pair of jeans.
For right now, though, O€™Neal is all about his music. €œI believe things happen organically. I wasn€™t trying to make this record, I wasn€™t trying to be a musician, it just happened. It was divine.€�
