After 106 years, House & Garden magazine has been shut down. (But we loved the Gwynneth issue!)
In a statement, the president of parent company Conde Nast explained that while "House & Garden has a long and venerable history ... we no longer believe it is a viable business investment for the company."Houseandgarden.com is also having its lights turned off. We checked - it just published its last blog post, from the Itinerant Urbanist. Here it is in its entirety:The Gehry Ghost House by Philip Johnson, 1984.My plan for today was to blog about my recent visit to Philip Johnson's Glass House, about how the little glass box that he built for himself in 1949, and all the other buildings he put up on his property over the years, revealed Johnson -who was never my favorite architect - to be extraordinarily interesting and endearingly complex. But my thoughts on Johnson were interrupted by the news that, after 106 years, Conde Nast has pulled the plug on House & Garden Magazine. So I guess it's time to stop blogging. The Itinerant Urbanist has been a part of the House & Garden website since April and it's been a true pleasure. I'm grateful to all the staff members at the magazine who made it happen especially Dominique Browning, Betsy Pochoda, Maria Baugh, Paul O'Donnell and Katy Elliott. The photo above is an architectural folly that Johnson built on his property out of chain-link fencing as a tribute to Frank Gehry. It is both a house and a garden; consider it a little memorial to magazine.I guess the Itinerant Urbanist will just have to move along. You can look for me back at my own website: www.karriejacobs.com. And you can write to me at itinerant.urbanist@gmail.com.Thanks for reading.
