If you took Survivor, America's Next Top Model, American Idol, and the Real World, put them all in a blender, I would imagine the result would closely resemble Bravo's latest reality competition series- Make Me a Supermodel (not to mention, be an absolute MUST WATCH). Hosted by Niki Taylor and Tyson Beckford, the show will follow 14 beautiful guys and girls (finally, a show with MALE models!), as they put their best face forward during a series of challenges designed to test their supermodel-potential. Borrowing a strategy from the American Idol playbook, this series places the fate of the contestants in the hands of the viewers, who will get the chance to vote each week either by phone, text message, or online at BravoTV.com to save their faves. It€™s a given that if you combine a bunch of models and make them compete against each other, drama is gonna unfold. However, this show takes it up a notch by housing their bevy of beauties together in a New York City town house (hot male and female models in one house? Can you say, palpable sexual energy?).
Stylehive was up bright and early to go to the unveiling of the Make Me a Supermodel interactive window display outside the NBC Experience Store, where we chatted with Niki and Tyson to find to get the inside scoop (okay, fine, we also really wanted to be in the presence of such an intense amount of scorching hotness!). Stylehive: What advantages do you think there are in having the viewers chose the winners, rather than industry types?Niki: I think it€™s because America€™s got style, and I think that they€™re very smart. They have a hundred magazine to choose from, so they€™ve been watching fashion and looking at fashion for a while now. And I don€™t know, it€™s a tough decision - I don€™t want to make that decision! So I like that it€™s in America€™s hands. Stylehive: I always wondered how they come to those kinds of decisions on shows like America€™s next top model. We see the judges talking, but we don€™t see how they eventually decide, or if there was a big fight.
Tyson: Well I€™ve been a judge on America€™s Next Top Model, and there€™s tons fighting! We€™ve already had our first fight even, but that€™s what it is.
Niki: It€™s passion! Stylehive:There is a lot of criticism against female modeling, and we've heard countless stories about how rough and brutal it can be, what about for the guys? Are there any secret struggles male models have to deal with?
Tyson: No, nothing. We never have fights, all the guys get along. There€™s no pressure, we€™re all normal! All the guys, it€™s like €œwhere are you going drinking tonight?€ We just have fun. The guys are real easy, we don€™t think about stuff like that.
Niki: And they€™re really healthy. They€™re in the gym, they€™re eating right, are you kidding me? They€™d get in such a bad mood if the didn€™t eat! Stylehive: So what do you think about the controversies over runway models these days being so super skinny?
Niki: You know, I€™ve never been a real skinny, skinny model, and I feel really bad for people who are struggling with that insecurity, but I think in any job you€™re gonna have people who have a weakness or an addiction, it€™s not just the modeling world. Unfortunately we€™re being watched, and people are paying attention to that. Stylehive: Obviously, there are going to be a lot of comparisons to ANTM. Aside from the judging technique- how is this show different?
Tyson: Well we€™ve got guys on our show, whereas Top Model is all about girls. The competitions are different every day. They€™re pretty much real-life scenarios, stuff that the kids are going through. So we try to put them in a real environment. Stylehive:What is your best 'supermodel' advice
Tyson: Know your booker.
Niki: Have great representation, a great agency, keep yourself healthy, eat right, drink lots of water, take your makeup off before you go to bed, which I€™ve always done! Stylehive: So Tyson, I€™m sure all the girls out there wanna know what you think makes a girl look sexy
Tyson: Shoes! All kinds- the higher the better. Shoes make the outfit, and it also makes you ladies feel good when you have on good shoes. And you know, you KNOW those shoes look good on you, so it changes your whole attitude.
Niki: And shoes you€™re comfortable in, because comfort is key because if you€™re wearing shoes that are too tight, or too small, it€™s gonna show up on your face!Make Me A Supermodel premiers tonight at 10 PM ET/PT on Bravo
