Yesterday we introduced you to Semi Precious Weapons lead singer Justin Tranter, creator of hot, under the radar fashion trend Garage Glam, Kate Moss muse, and all around super swell guy. Among the very long list of things Justin is famous for? Outrageous sexually charged performances, wrenchingly raw lyrics, incredibly successful jewelry lines, a collaboration with DKNY, and a unique (to say the least) sense of style.
Read on for part two of our exclusive interview with JT for his unique take on fashion and what constitutes a "fashionista."Stylehive: You just have a crazy, unique, amazing style - how did it develop?Justin Tranter: Well I've been through many a fashion stage, and I think I've finally found one that works! For a while I looked like a homeless Golden Girl, I was going for it though. I was like 'my look is golden girl hobo-chic' and it was pretty much a big mess, but pretty fabulous! I would wear a lot of cut up furs, and off-the shoulder sequined tops. And then when I met Tommy and Roy (band stylists and owners of Brooklyn-based boutique Alter), they saw a show and they were like 'you guys are just so f***ing fantastic,' and so I really have to credit them for helping me create my style. I mean I love a cropped jacket, I love a skin tight pant. Normally if I'm going out I'll just wear pantyhose, because pants are so pedestrian!Stylehive: Pantyhose??
JT: Yes! Pants are over! Just pantyhose and 6 inch heels, and a cropped blazer. And I wear a dance belt, like what ballerinas wear. It's fantastic! So ballerina wear on the bottom, and 6 inch heels, and a cropped blazer on the top. And you always gotta have blonde hair if you can have it, so I have it as blonde as possible. And I'm a firm believer in full makeup every day, because, why the f*ck not? If you can find 15 minutes, you might as well do it!Stylehive: Any fashion muses?
JT: I think the Olsens' look fantastic! They end up on the worst dressed pages of Us Weekly every single week, but I think they look amazing and they have a style of their own that is awesome. And obviously I love Gwen Stefani, I think Kate Moss always looks fantastic-,and she just couldn't be a nicer person. I also love Naomi Campbell's fashion. I think she always looks great, she has a great personal style.Styehive: When I was at your concert, I was in awe of how fashionable your fans are! Everyone was so creative.
JT: Yeah, I think they all kind of fall in the Garage Glam category that maybe me and the band started. It's about using what you have to be as fabulous as possible, and not being afraid - at all. I think a lot of the people don't dress like that every day, but when they come to our shows, and they wanna look crazy, they'll figure something out!Styehive: I did some Googling, and one word that is used repeatedly when describing your fan base is "fashionistas." How do you define that term?
JT: It's such a funny term because everyone looks at it differently, and I mean, our fans are NOT fashionistas. When I think of fashionistas, I think of the Sex and the City girls, I think a fashionista is like a society girl. We actually have the most mixed fan base ever. You have like 40 year old guys, you have 16 year old girls, you have 18 year old boys who are dressing like girls, you have 18 year old girls who are dressing like boys, and then we go to the Midwest and everyone looks like an Old Navy ad and they couldn't be happier! But they're so excited to see us and they just love it! And maybe they'll wear a little extra eye makeup that night or something.Jutin Tranter Archive
