Yesterday, the couple behind Sixx Design (attractive, talented, with six kids - don't hate them) clued us in on Vintage Nouveaux, their name for mixing unique found and antique pieces with cutting edge modern design and architecture. Today, in the second video of our five-day series, Bob and Cortney Novogratz delve even further into the je ne sais crois aspect of found items, how they work to warm up the hard, cold edges of modern interior design, and what they say about the people who find and display them.
Ever since they started shopping at flea markets together fifteen years ago, "we always wanted unique pieces," Cortney told me during a tour of their lower Manhattan home. "And the beauty of living in New York is you could go into the Soho showrooms and get inspired, even if you couldn't afford the prices. And we constantly hit funky stores where people don't realize the treasures are hiding."
"Plus its just fun to get up early in the morning, get a big coffee, and hit the fleas," says Bob. And hit the fleas - and antique stores and art galleries and salvage yards - they have. The Novogratz house is a treasure trove of amazing finds. But the transcendent aspect of their aesthetic is the perfect balance their home's modern interior design provides, acting to feature and accentuate their loot. But don't take it from me. Learn more about the push and pull between modern and antique from Bob and Cortney and see examples from several of Sixx Design's favorite rooms in today's StylehiveTV segment. It's Sixx Design Week!
