Inspired by the elements of nature, the Tracy Reese Spring 2009 collection marked a beautiful progression through the seasons with an array of romantic pieces that were both delicate and relaxed as well as and sophisticated and sleek. To enhance the theme of the collection, the hair and makeup was kept soft and natural with a subtle hints of drama. I got the chance to hang backstage before the show, where I spoke to the hair and makeup artists to get the 411 on how to re-create the looks. Read on to find out!
Makeup:Key makeup artist Mally Roncal described the look as "a very young, fresh, ethereal, angelic kind of look. We wanted it very flirty and young." To create this effect, she used soft blushy colors on the face and around the eye and added more drama and definition to the eyes and brows. Face: For that satin-skin look, take a cream blush (Get Cheeky in Dawn, $25) and apply it all over the eye area- from lash-line to brow. Connect it to the cheeks by bringing the color out, creating a C-shape, and then patting it all over the top of the cheekbones. Eyes: Line the upper and lower lids with a brown eye-pencil (Lash Illusion Lash Filler, $20) for definition and then line the inner rims with black liner for some edge. Emphasize the lashes by curling them and then applying lots of black mascara (Volumizing Mascara, $28). Lips: Finish the look with a very soft apricot shimmery lip gloss, $15 (use 'Be a Peach' with 'Love is Pink' on top). Hair:
Nathanial Hawkins for TRESemme created the hair look, which he described as very "downtown girl- when you see her you have to stop and take it all in. Her hair is just effortless, you can't really figure out how she did it but it looks gorgeous."1) Start by applying a volumizing root lifting spray (Big Boost, $4.75).
2) Blow-dry the hair in the opposite direction of how you would normally dry it- drying toward the roots to expand the hair and create some texture.
3) Use your fingers to pull the hair back into a ponytail, keeping it soft and a little bit rough
4) Apply a heat protecting spray (Thermal Creations Heat Tamer, $4.75) and curl the tail.
5) Loosely braid the hair and secure it with another ponytail holder. Then, shake it out and pull it so it doesn't look like a braid anymore. Twist it up into a chignon, pin it into place and hair is effortless and chic.
