New York Fashion Week Trend Report: Not So Lovely Leather

Remember that brief moment where leather got to ditch its rough-and-tumble persona because it played so nicely with spring's pretty dresses? Well, it's back to its bad self again, and to be honest we're a bit relieved. You didn't think it could pretend forever, did you? Matthew Williamson and Rock & Republic topped the long list of designers who made the runways more rugged this season with leather corsets, skirts, and pants that didn't spare as much as one curve, while Diesel Black Gold threw a shredded leather jacket over boyfriend jeans for a surprisingly put-together look- I'm hoping those two don't break up anytime soon. Alexander Wang's collection was low on leather as is typical for spring, yet a pair of leather pants with an exposed zip fly generated enough grungy sex appeal for the entire collection. Other notable leather moments: Yigal Azrouel's structural washed leather outerwear, and Ralph Lauren's tan leather and silk safari jackets. Expect to still see the leather jacket and dress combination come spring 2009, but don't be surprised when the dresses are a little less dainty, and the jackets a bit more dangerous.
