Meet Designer Nina Nikicio, Stylehive's Next Big Thing!

If anyone has had the misfortune of breaking up with a boyfriend or girlfriend, then you've probably had the urge to stay in your room all day, watch bad movies, and wear the same thing for 2 weeks straight. While I can't help you with your choices of movies, it may be worthwhile to take a look at Nina Nikicio's newest diffusion line oneandahalf. Her first collection, entitled "Heartbreak" boasts affordable prices from $16-$55. Instead of wearing sweats that have seen better days, "Heartbreak" features shirts and blazers with detachable arms, collars, and cuffs that provide endless variations. That means no one will ever know that shirt dress you wore yesterday is the same as the sleeveless vest you're wearing today! With a monochrome black, white, and gray color pallete, it's easy to mix, match, and never clash. Indonesian-born and Singapore-based designer Nina Nikicio started her eponymous fashion line in 2006 after attending Lasalle College of The Arts in Singapore and earning a diploma in fashion design. She's certainly keeping busy with two fashion lines! I got a chance to find out what inspired Nina for her latest collection and what we can expect to find in the near future. Click here to visit the oneandahalf site and contact them directly to order. Read on for the interview and click the slideshow to see her oneandahalf line.

Stylehive: Give us a mini-background of your beginning.
Nina: Oneandahalf is a second line of nikicio. I would like to grab a younger target market and I think a second line should be the answer as it will allow us to do a collection with cheaper price ranges and a new look as well. It started when I was doing a final project for my diploma in Fashion Business. My friends and I were really keen to introduce a different approach of fashion and so Oneandahalf is born. The brand itself is about giving more than a single use of clothing. All of our clothes from Oneandahalf can be styled in such different ways.

Stylehive: What are your inspirations?
Nina: Collection 1: Heartbreak is pretty straightforward as it's inspired by the end of one relationship and so the color is somber in black, white, and grey palette. The tassels and attached shawls are used in the collection to represent tears and hoods are used to hide the face. The detachable shirt, blazer, cuff, and collar are used to represent the shattered feeling. We've all been there and it's not pretty, but it's very challenging to create a collection based on sadness and make it look beautiful. If there's such a word as beautiful sadness, then this is what the collection is about.

Stylehive: What's next for you?
Nina: Nikicio:mixte Vol.04, entitled WAR will be out at the end of this month. As for oneandahalf, we're keen in stocking them all around the world. Oneandahalf itself will make a new collection every twice a year.

Stylehive: How do you feel about being The 'Next Big Thing?'
Nina: Honored, really. We know that we are able to sell the clothes based on research and everything, but never suspect that the brand is going to be this big.
