Hot Trend: Crazy for Cupcakes

by Sabrina Yeung • Mar 30, 2006 1:26 AM PST

Before their rise, cupcakes were just another dessert consumed at children€™s€™ birthday parties. Then came €œSex and the City€, where Carrie Bradshaw€™s cupcake fetish made them a delicacy for stylish SATC fans everywhere. Carrie€™s cupcake bakery of choice is Magnolia Bakery, located in the West Village conveniently across the street from Marc Jacobs. Magnolia makes cupcakes the old fashioned way, out of golden sponge cake and topped with a generous swirl of pastel colored ultra buttery, rich vanilla frosting. It€™s no wonder lines form around the block as late as midnight.

The popularity of Magnolia Bakery is only one sign of the growing cupcake craze. There are blogs dedicated solely to cupcakes and creative cupcake recipes. Cupcake caterers who specialize in delivering cupcakes for birthdays, weddings, bridal showers and any kind of party are popping up in towns across the country.

Instead of just chocolate and vanilla, there are a plethora of cupcake flavors to choose from. Citizen Cupcake in San Francisco offers Rocky Road, Pineapple Upside-down and Moka Choka to Bay Area cupcake addicts. €œChockylit€, a cupcake blog, shares creative recipes including a papaya-coconut cupcake smothered with ginger-lime cream cheese frosting.
